(LoR) A Perilous Plunge! by Mark of Falworth, on Flickr
Mark had no intention of surrendering to the vile underlings of Karain, but in his state of amnesia he thought he stood no chance against four well-armed warriors.
But as is often the case Mark had a "brilliant" plan of escape!
Our hero raised his mighty battle axe menacingly, then hurled it at the opposing leader! The soldiers rushed towards the fugitive, only to have Mark's helmet and armor flung in their faces! Such tactics were unheard of! Before the Outlaws could recover from the surprise Mark was a hundred yards out to sea... swimming swiftly without the weight of his weapons.
To follow Mark in full armor was nothing short of madness. It was then that the warriors of Karain ruefully acknowledged that they had no long-range weapon among them. None that is, except insults.
"COME BACK YOU SPINELESS WORM!"
"COWARD LOREESI!! YOU'LL DROWN!"
Mark paid no heed to their verbal affronts and continued at a more relaxed pace to swim out into the open ocean.
"Better to drown trying to escape then be hacked to bits!"
Our hero hoped there was more land of some sort ahead, otherwise this would be a very, very long swim....
(LoR) The Sea-Eagle Strikes! by Mark of Falworth, on Flickr
Mark swam for a grueling 16 hours before he sighted a small dark object on the watery horizon in the wee hours of the morning. Was it a boat? A comatose whale perhaps? it was still too far away and dark to see...
A few minutes more brought our hero to the object, which turned out to be a huge rock that stood out from the lapping waves in lonely dignity.
Mark crawled wearily up the barnacle-covered boulder and collapsed onto the stony island.
There he fell fast asleep, and slept for who knows how long. Mark's bad dream about messed-up hair was interrupted by the shrill cry of a bird of prey echoing across the waves.
Mark raised his fatigued form and opened his salt-encrusted eyes.
"Hmm... What was that... And how is it midday? It was morning t-two minutes ago..."
Our hero looked around, dazed from the terrible trials he had undergone.
"Whoever that Karain fellow is, he's going to pay for me being so dreadfully indisposed.."
Mark's vision finally came into focus, and he espied what looked like a vulture circling miles above.
"Aha! That's a good sign! There must be some land hereabouts..."
Unfortunately for Mark, the "Vulture" suddenly swooped down for a closer look at the little sun-burnt man on the rock.
As it's thirty-foot wingspan whipped by, Mark was suddenly aware of the dangers of being stranded on a rock in the middle of the ocean.
"B-Big...Vulture!!..."
The huge black beast circled around again. It might not want just a look this time round!
Mark was utterly adverse to being snatched from his boulder. And, as usual, there wasn't a single loose rock or stone that could be used as a weapon.
Thankfully for our hero, on the person of the guard that Mark had ambushed in his cell was a small dagger, which Mark had neglected to rid himself of when he swam from Karain's warriors.
With his little knife in hand and the adrenaline pumping through his veins once more, Mark steeled his nerves as the mighty eagle with glistening talons raced towards him!
