So the adventurers spread out into the shadows of the seemingly empty room, all individually hoping to find something of worth to either aid them on this quest, or to return them a tidy profit once they escaped the confines of these crumbling walls. Though the castle had long been abandoned by civilized man, its dark, dank corners were still home to a variety of creatures that creeped and crawled across its surfaces and retreated back to the shadows as the heroes explored each and every nook and cranny in hope of discovering something of value. It was Sir Robyn that found the first treasure. The shield was initially obscured by the dust and dirt that had gathered on it over centuries of lying dormant. Sir Robyn picked it up and brushed off the grime revealing a gleaming surface. It was sturdy but light. “Aye, this will do nicely” he muttered to himself, pleased with his discovery. (Sir Robyn gains 2 Bravery)But his pleasure was soon disrupted as Bandi the Barbarian, who had been exploring a section of the room away from the others screamed in delight. “Haaaah!!!!!! Look at this beauty!” the barbarian exclaimed. The gem he found was the size of his clenched fist. “I will grow old surround by riches, whereas you will all die as paupers, and I will dance upon your graves!” the barbarian boasted. He leant forward to pick it up... Grindel Cragtooth, the wizard, was more familiar with magical items however and shouted a warning “DON’T TOUCH IT!”... but it was too late. Bandi had gazed into the gem's reflective surface and activated the FEAR PORTAL... FEAR PORTAL –Little is known about fear portals other than their dangerous ability to paralyze even the most hardened warrior. Outwardly Bandi the Barbarian stood transfixed by the gem, while inwardly his spirit battled with the thoughts that that portal embedded in his mind. The portal was able to delve into the darkest recesses of his brain, finding those childhood fears that the barbarian had thought he had long since conquered or outgrown. Memories of lonely bear hunts as an infant, those nights spent in the cold winter’s snow that sought to make men out of boys. Memories of loved ones lost to old age, disease or in battle. Memories that he had long since learnt to cast aside as childhood weaknesses. While the barbarian battled inwardly, his fellow adventurers sought to help him outwardly. “Blasted fool!” exclaimed Grindel the wizard. He had encountered magical items like this before, but that did not mean that there was a simple solution. Summoning some magic from deep down inside the wizard launched an enchantment at the incapacitated brute. Magic 96 points submitted, negative 3. 6 rolled. Resolved. There was a blinding flash. The spell seemed to have worked in counteracting the gems charm and the barbarian briefly stirred from his stupor. “Quickly! Someone try and rouse him! The spell won’t hold for long” Grindel commanded, as he continued to direct his staff at the gem. Seeing no-one else move Ardy the Halfling thief leapt onto the barbarian’s huge shoulders and hollered into the brute’s ear “DROP THE GEM YOU NUMBSKULL!”. Bravery 76 points submitted, negative 1. 2 rolled. Resolved.Bandi shook his head violently and let out a shout. The gem fell from his hands but continued to glow, it’s strange magic unwilling to let go of his mind. “Kick it away you bonehead!” the Halfling continued to scream still gripping onto the barbarian’s solid neck. The crystal flew against a wall and shattered, the ominous glow suddenly vanishing from the room. Skill 21 points submitted, negative 1. 6 rolled. Resolved. Cunning 23 points submitted. Resolved. The barbarian slumped to his knees with a groan and Ardy slid from his perch on the brute’s shoulders. This had all transpired in moments, but for Bandi it had felt like an age. Every fear and worry of his rugged life had been dragged to the surface from the depths of his mind. He was exhausted. The other adventurers gathered round. Sir Robyn looked at the wearied savage “Will he live? He looks fatigued” he enquired of the wizard. Grindel seemed to be distracted by his surroundings “Er.. yes, yes. He just needs a bit of time to remember that his fears have been long vanquished” the wizard replied. Grindel found what he had been looking for, a shard of the shattered crystal. He picked it up and blew on it. The fragment shone, then crumbled into dust (Grindel gains 2 strength).“Well then, does anyone else want to pick up a dangerous enchanted object, or shall we move on?” the wizard asked of the group. “Er.. no fine by me” Ardy responded skittishly, as he dropped something into his pocket (Ardy gains secret item).“I’ve found something...” announced the ranger from another corner of the room, the adventurers unaware of his absence as they clustered around Bandi until now. “It’s a wooden chest”. Altar attempted to open the chest but there seemed to be some sort of enchantment keeping its contents safe inside. “I don’t know about this…” said Ardy the thief, still nervous from their recent brush with the consequences of dark magic. “Stand aside you crybabies…” Grindel the wizard said as he pushed the ranger and the Halfling aside “…it’s a simple sealing spell”. The gruff wizard waved his staff and the wooden chest popped open. “…And that’ll do nicely for my troubles” said the wizard as he picked a deep red gem from inside the chest (Grindel gains 3 Magic).“And this will do for mine” said the quiet ranger, picking out a pair of ornate gauntlets (Altar gains 2 Bravery).Ardy the Halfling pushed through the group of adventurers, “There must be something in there for me?!” he said as he rummaged through the remaining contents of the chest. “Owww!” he screamed as something bit him “There’s something living in here!” (Ardy loses 2 strength. EDIT: As he's on 0 strength already, he will instead lose 2 health). “I guess there was something for you after all” chuckled the Barbarian, having now recovered from his torment with the fear portal. Undeterred the Halfling continued to sift through the chest, that seemed to be full of dusty sheets and old cutlery. “Aha!” he exclaimed, now standing in the chest holding his prize aloft. It was a large spoon. “And what do you intend to do with such wealth…” Sir Robyn asked patronisingly. “Never you mind. You obviously do not understand the ways of halflings” retorted Ardy, pocketing his new-found treasure (Ardy gains 4 Skill).“Pah” Sir Robyn sneered and kicked the chest, causing the lid to slam down onto the halfling’s head. (Ardy loses 1 health).Wooden Chest Magic 2 – 1 point submitted, negative 1. 1 rolled. Resolved. Strength 2 – 2 points submitted. Resolved. Bravery 0Skill 3 – 3 points submitted. Resolved.
