Greetings! I'm in the process of building my second "castle" related theme building ever. The one thing that always gets me is understanding what the flooring should look like. Do you have any pointers? My castle has 3 levels to it. I'm using light gray for (human turned or affected) stone and dark gray for rock. Shades of brown for general wood material, sometimes black for wood if treated. I don't know about how to describe the castle era, but there are arches and buttresses; more fantasy looking. This is more like a kings castle, but not a primary one.
Let's go through the levels and get your opinion
-- in the basement level which below rock level (e.g. you walk down stairs into the side of a rock area) is for the jail and food storage
Q: I wonder - should I leave this with gray stud floor? Should the floor be dirt floor and be a tan in color? What about stud floor vs. tiles? Do many builders tile the floors in gray or tan?
-- the primary level -- is the ground floor. This is where the kitchen and primary entry to the great hall area. There is also a stable for a few of the royal horses. The kitchen is actually built "on top of the jail" area. In my head and drawings I picture that the kitchen was built on solid ground first as part of the original castle, then the jail was built underneath it. The great hall actually extends in height from primary floor to the top level (2 floor high)
Q: So in general for the primary flooring on the primary level would a castle builder leave it gray? Let's assume that we are talking more about the floor material and not about if there is fancy carpet\runner on top (like what you might see in a great hall).
-- the top level, is for the banquet\dining hall, library, bedrooms (including master) and a small party hall\ball area.
Q: At what point does a floor become a wood floor in a castle? Or can each floor of a castle have stone floor?
Q: Does the era and scale of the castle determine if all floors are stone?
Q: If stone is used, is it common then to have some sort of rug or covering?
Q: Do castle builders use wood for the floors just because the color is warm and inviting?
Ok thanks for your help! Below are pics of the WIP.
The first is a micro scale of the whole area (what I wish I could get to). The castle is in the back left.
The second is of the front view of the WIP castle. The towers on either side of the gate are still being worked on.
The third highlights the floor plan concept for the castle area
I'd love to get your feedback on flooring as well as using this thread for allowing me to ask a few other "newb" like castle questions.
thanks
mark
