Hey guys,
I'm thinking of maybe starting a South Carolina LUG, as none (to the best of my knowledge) exist.
I had a few questions first that maybe an experienced LUG member, could answer.
1) How do you start a LUG?
2) What do LUGs do at meetings?
3) How often do LUGs typically meet?
4) How are (group) displays usually organized, and how often (should my LUG participate in them).
Any other general tips about LUGs would be helpful.
If you would be interested in joining, (this is not official yet though), just shoot me a PM.
The tentative name for the LUG will be PalmettoLUG (or PalmLUG for short).

I imagine someone would need a lot of spare time and dedication to run (not that I'm doubting you). I'm just saying, you need to put a ton of thought into a project like this! I hope it works out well.

i would suggest looking at other LUG's websites (Chicago LUG for instance), and seeing how they do things. Good luck with your LUG! Hope it works out, and people join!

The LUG that I participate in, took about 10 years or so before it really got going. It started with three for five years or so. Then bumped up to about 7 or 8. By year 8 they had gotten about 15. Today they have over 40 strong.
The process takes a while but is very well rewarding.

So should I continue to pursue starting a LUG? This is completely up to you, not us. But if you do not have an incredible amount of free time you can give to this idea, I wouldn't consider it. Running a LUG appears to be something immense.

Running a LUG in full-on LUG mode is immense, but running an informal LUG until you have enough people to reach "official" status in the eyes of TLG might not be such a difficult thing, especially if you only meet once every few months at the start.
You could start with an announcement on several Lego sites just saying, "Hey, I am trying to start a LUG and would like to invite anyone who is interested to join me at _________ location on _______ at ________ pm. There will be cookies."
Then just see if anyone responds. Even if it is just one person, it's a start!

No no cookies.... free Lego! A lug that is official is a huge undertaking. If your up for it go for it. However J agree with jordan. Have a few informal get to gethers. Gather people and once you have enough to deligate tasks to make it official.

Free cookies would get me there.
I also agree about how to start a LUG although the one I'm part of now is getting close to 70 or 80 members. We keep growing and its nice to meet new people.
I think I agree with everyone who suggests putting it out there to see if you can find people in your area that are interested. The more people you gather, the easier it will be to formalize an official LUG.
As for the meetings they are designed to do the following:
A) For members to bring MOC's, VIG's or exchange brick for fun and show off creations. B) Handle official LUG business which is usually about organizing a Lego Event, participating in a major Lego event, or discussing future LUG affairs like the Website, member participation, member recruitment, disbursement of materials or conducting drafts. C) For members to just socialize and have a great time.
As for how often they meet. The Average LUG meets once a month and the locations will vary to work for member convenience.
As for how groups displays work. They are organized by a member in the group taking leadership to work with community leaders to organize the LUG's side of an event. This often means communication work, public relations, advertising support, etc. As for participating. As an Official LUG you must participate in 3 Events organized or participated by your LUG that do not include large conventions. BrickFair, BrickFête, Brickexpo, etc are considered Lego official events and do not count towards your 3 events.
Also I noticed you are missing LUG structure. A LUG typically has a President of the organization who is supported by either Directors who act as trustee members for the LUG or by other roles. Regardless you will need a Treasurer who will manage LUG fees for events, LUG support, and collect LUG related dues in order to manage the LUG. Make sure you vet this person properly...as well you will need a LUG Executive Secretary (Often a Director) who manages communication between members, news members and handles communication with events coordinators...for the most part this person is your public relations specialist.
If you have more questions about LUG's RBC, just send me a quicky PM.
