Hello it's me again!
A few days ago I thought about starting a castle project. I figured out some new building techniques and want to try them out in a project.
Now,. as i thought about it and started putting out some plans and reading some books about castles there is a big questionmark in my head....
What about realism in Lego castles?
There is a very informative and helpful Youtube Channel out there called "Shadiversity
". Especially this video -> www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJkXRDKdAcM was very very informative and helpful for me. The Youtuber is showing the prionciples of castle designs in a castle he made himself after more or less realistic circumstances. He is showing all the rooms and little details a real castle should have or would have had back in the middleage.
We have some really really great castle builders here and I hope you can give me some answers.
Back in my childhood I build castles with one brick thick walls. I thought about 2 Brick thick walls for beeing more realistic. But as iI learned recently: "realistic" should be 2-4 meters what is around 6-12 studs
Back in research I found out there are majorly two to three kinds of Lego castle builders; One type is building realistic models after real castles. Mostly just a fassade without any rooms or playability. The second type is building castles for play and showing the interiour details with rooms. The third group are those guys who are building fassades and medieval life with incredible detail and advanced building techniques but if you ever touch it, it will break into thousand pieces It is mostly very nice looking but in terms of wall thickness and stuff far away from "realism". Walls build with tiles you could easily climb without any problems. No need for siege equipment I climbed the wall of an old ruin in Germany where the mortar of the wall came off and it was fairly easy to get very high up.
Do I miss some guys? Are there Lego castles built yet which are "realistic" and playable? I mean parts like the machicolations. Ofc its hard to build them with holes so the defenders can shoot through. Its Lego and we are somehow limitzed to what pieces are available. But how about the other parts? Do you build realistic or are you more focusing on minifigs and playability? I got a 5 years old daughter and I would probably never build a cvatle that she cant play with. Also when I build I love to build interiors and that kind of lego realism. But do you really need 6 brick thick walls? lso there would be a major problem with round towers as you cant make the wall that strong. Not even talking about a partscountwhich would be easily over half a million pieces.
I like the Idea to have a second or even a third gatehouse. All the little details you have on real castles. How about you? What are you focusing on? Are you building interiors? On conventions its mostly hard to even show them.... and with round towers....I have no Idea how to build a floor
