Part 1 by Lord Silver ~Andarheim War Council~Holmstrom leaned forward over the round table. He pointed to an area on the map. “Most of our remaining troops are camped here. And our ships are moored here, along the right horn.”He drew his finger across another point. He looked up at the other senior war leaders standing around the table, two Garhim and three Loreesi generals. He thought to himself. “If we focused our troops here, in the marshes… No, that wouldn’t work.” He looked up, and for the first time noticed someone was missing. “Where’s Ivarson? I need his experience. Is he dead? I didn’t see him during the battle.” “I’m not sure, Sir. Perhaps he was captured?” Holmstrom’s aide, Lieutenant Erik Jansson, responded. Holmstrom frowned. He doubted that Ivarson, a veteran soldier and sailor, would rather be captured than downed fighting. He looked down again at the map, assessing the figurines that represented their troops. “Captain Salazar,” The Goði began. How many of your troops survived?” “Thanks to Stendahl, over three quarters of my battalion is intact.” He replied. “By the way, where is he? I’d like to offer my thanks and gratitude.” “Captain Stendahl is dead, at the hands of the Lenfels and Outlaws. And so are many of his warriors, and many of mine.” A new voice rose from the beach, and in the dim light Holmstrom saw a dark outline. As the man neared, realization dawned on Holmstrom’s face. “Hakon!” He said, delighted. “You’re alive! What happened to you?” “All in good time, my old friend. First, we need to figure out how to rescue our men captured on Fýrdraca, they are mostly Loreesi," he said, throwing a scornful look at the Loreesi present in the room. "We'd best strike at first light, but we may need more troops. We took quite the beating,” He looked meaningfully at the other leaders, those whose plans did not work in the previous battle. “I’ve already sent messengers to the surrounding farms. Our reinforcements should be here within the next day. Our numbers will double with them” Holmstrom said, attempting to relieve him. “Commodore Johannson, how many ships have you?” “I have twenty ships ready to sail, and another eight being repaired. We have more than enough crew for all twenty-eight, so sailing won’t be a problem,” The Commodore moved a few ship figurines onto the map. “What will be a problem, though, is the fact that we will be sailing over open waters, with limited visibility. The Outlaws will surely take advantage of this.” “Not to worry.” Ivarson replied, having already thought of this. Send seven ships ahead, with Lieutenant Jansson’s troops. They’ll act as a diversion, to occupy the Outlaws while the rest of the fleet slips past.” “Good idea, Hakon,” Goði Joran looked up at the rest of the war council. “General Alejandro, with Sir Thomas dead and Prince Mark missing, you’re the ranking Loreesi here. Can you have your troops ready by tomorrow? And you, Jansson?” “Certainly,” Jansson replied, with Alejandro nodding in agreement. "It’s settled then, Jansson and Alejandro will lead a diversion, while myself, Ivarson, and Captain Salazar lead the rest of the fleet. We'll spread out along the coast, so they can't stop us all. We'll need to be careful in the jungles. They're used to this combat, and we're not,” Holmstrom decided. He looked towards the corner, where a dark-haired Garhim warrior sat. “Oh, and Lord Silver, You have the most important task of all. I want you to stay here. Wait for our reinforcements, and as soon as they arrive, lead them to Fyrdraca.” He nodded at the Goði in acknowledgement, who continued "Remember gentlemen, our mission here is to rescue the prisoners and get out. We are not at war... yet. We rescue our men, withdraw then I will return to Roawia to seek advice from the King and Jarl." The council departed, rushing to the horses to move out. ~Grimfell Coast, “The Right Horn”~
“Gentlemen, we have our orders.” Jansson declared, looking out over the ranks of Garhim and Loreesi soldiers, eager to avenge their fallen brethren. “We move out at first light, Rescue your brothers. Leave no man behind!” The cheer was taken up by the ranks of soldiers, growing deeper, like some feral lion’s roar. The chant grew so loud Jansson was sure the Lenfels could hear it on Fýrdraca. Part 2 and the GC to follow shortly...

Part 2 by Kingdomviewbricks ~Fýrdraca Isle, Southern Coast~The soldier shifted uncomfortably at his post, beads of sweat dripping slowly down his back. Blasted island. What are we still doing here anyway? We avenged the explorers and held the island. Killed the great Mark of Falworth as well, by some accounts. There’ll be a few graybeards in Lenfald who will rejoice to hear that. He closed his eyes, but the outline of sea and sky still floated before him, etched into his eyelids by the tropic sun. He forced them open again, squinting. This time the burning horizon was subtly different, white points of light on the sea... His eyes widened. “Sails! SAILS!” ~Fýrdraca Isle, War Camp~“Seven ships were seen and there may be more. The royal colors were identified, so it’s almost certainly another invasion fleet,” said Captain Albern Godric of the Lenfald Expeditionary Forces, as he addressed the assembled leaders of the disparate Lenfel and Outlaw force. “We’ve called this council to decide our response.” “They just don’t learn, do they?” said Hans Zarkan, leader of the Emerald Wolves mercenary company. “What options do we have?” asked cartographer Leonidas Kenrick. “We’ve defeated Mark’s force and retrieved the gold, so our primary mission is accomplished. Should we simply return north to Abnerburgh and avoid further loss of life?” “Abnerburgh would be a better defensive position,” said Godric. “However, some of our fleet is away on supply convoy missions, and it would be difficult to evacuate the entire army in time. Certainly we’d have no way to transport the prisoners.” “We’re not going to throw away my investment,” growled Zarkan. “This isn’t about your coffers, Zarkan,” snapped territory Governor Jaecar Talon. “Men died for this land, and we’re not just going to let those carrion-pickers have it." He grinned. "Besides, I’m not leaving until I have a dragon head bigger than yours to hang on my wall.” “Well, we need to consider all our options,” said Godric. “Could we march north overland?” “Between the terrain, heat, vegetation, disease and predators, I don’t think that’s practicable,” said Kenrick. “A small trained party of explorers is one thing, but an army is quite another. We’d sustain heavy losses, certainly.” “We’ll need to worry about disease here as well,” said Godric. “They’ll be more cautious this time, it could be a protracted campaign.” “Disease will hurt them more than hurts us,” said Talon. “We have a clean camp on high ground, away from the swamps and miasma. What’s our supply situation though?” “Mark’s fleet arrived rather sooner than we expected,” said Godric, “so we have plenty of supplies, with more en route to the island that can be diverted if necessary. My main fear is the geography: with this much coastline, we can’t possibly stop them from landing.” “That won’t be necessary,” said Zarkan. “They can land, but if they try to march anywhere in the jungle, our archers will pick them off and they’ll never know what hit them.” “He’s right,” said Talon. “They may be our match in open combat, but our men are better trained in forest warfare.” “We also know the ground and natural dangers better than they do,” said Kenrick. “My men have already mapped this area.” Governor Talon turned to the Outlaw leaders. “How about you? Will you stay?” “Thar’s a good chance that more gold’s to be had in these junglesss,” said Outlaw Captain Grimteeth. “I think most of our men will stay.” The other Outlaws nodded. “Our boys live for a good scrap.” “What about ships?” asked Godric. “Most of our navy is tied up in supply convoys, but their ships will be vulnerable as they come across from Grimfell.” “Attacking isolated, heavily laden ships from the cover of an unknown coastline?” Captain Grimteeth grinned, revealing his namesake fangs. “Leave it to the expertsss.” “That’s it then,” said Talon. “We fight. Remember, and tell your men to remember, what we fight for. They think they can take our land whenever they want. They think they can murder our unarmed explorers for a pile of gold. You all saw the bones, left to rot out in the sun. Slaughtered like animals.” He drew a knife and hurled it, thudding, into the opposite wall. “They started this fight, and we’re going to finish it.”

GLOBAL CHALLENGE XV - The Fight for FýrdracaThe first battle for Fýrdraca has been a bloody, pyrrhic victory for the Lenfel/Outlaw alliance who now find themselves regrouping in the ruins, burying the dead and struggling to feed both the remains of their army and the Loreesi and Garheim captives. With Prince Mark Lorean missing, presumed dead - the remains of the combined Roawian forces have withdrawn under Garheim leadership to Andarheim. Hakon Ivarson hastily regroups and replenishes the Roawian force. The composition of the force has changed. The initial expeditionary force was mainly a Loreesi affair - now with the heavy casualties taken in battle, and regrouping in Garheim territory under Garheim leadership, the force is more blue than red. In Ivarson's mind, Loreos had their chance - Now, when the enemy is least expecting it, he will lead his new force back to Fýrdraca, take the ruins, free the captives and reclaim Roawian honour. The Garheim battle cry - "Leave no man behind!" Thus the battle lines have been drawn in the New World - Prepare for the second battle of Fýrdraca in which Garheim and Loreos will once again face off against Lenfald and the Outlaws - this time, the stakes for the colonies are high! The ChallengeDetermine the fate of Fýrdraca through the following categories: Categories 1. Run through the JungleWarfare in the dense vegetation of the Western Isles is characterised by surprise tactics. Show your forces using an ambush or trap against their enemies. (Or having an ambush or trap used against them.) Light infantry should be the focus here. Remember the terrain is mostly unsuitable for horses and neither side brought many anyway. 2. Defend the camp/Rescue the prisonersIf you are Lenfel or Outlaw- Show your forces defending or preparing to defend their war camp against enemy attack. Camps can be fortified, but only with rough, hasty wood and earthworks. If you are Loreesi or Garheim- Show your forces liberating or attempting to liberate the prisoners taken at the first battle of Fýrdraca from Lenfel and/or Outlaw captivity. 3. Battle in the RuinsShow your forces fighting or preparing to fight their enemies in, on, or near some of the ancient ruins on the southern peninsula. Ruins should be roughly Meso-american inspired. (Other influences are fine, we just don’t want to see generic European castle ruins.) 4. The Industrious Motherland Supporting colonies in the GWI is a huge endeavour and requires a massive amount of support from the mainland factions. Show a scene on the mainland that shows the industry behind supporting colonisation efforts. Ideas could include dockyards, ship building yards, lumber mills (for shipbuilding) - pretty much any form of industry! Remember - the mainland is not at war (yet...) and the news of the conflict on Fýrdraca has not yet broken. You are not to depict conflict between the factions on the mainland. Bonus Category 5. Best all-Lego Scene
Create a scene showing any aspect of warfare, exploration or life in the Great Western Isles. One catch, the scene must be completely Lego - eg the whole frame of your picture should be filled with Lego - No background at all - unless of course it is Lego! This year's Summer Joust contest features an all Lego category, so if you are interested entries can be dual purposed for both competitions (be sure to check the Summer Joust rules before posting). (NOTE: the Summer Joust ends June 30th.) An example of an all-Lego scene is below: Sizes
- Bignette: 16x16, very minimal overhang allowed - Restricted: 20x20 minimum to 32x32 maximum, minimal overhang allowed - Unrestricted: minimum 48x48, no limit to overhang, no maximum size - There is no size restrictions in Category 5 - All Lego Scene Rules
- You may submit one entry in each of the sizes above. Your entries may depict scenes from any of 4 categories. You may also submit an entry in the bonus 'All Lego' category. For example, I could submit a bignette in category 1 - Run through the Jungle, a restricted in category 2 - Defend the camp/rescue the prisoners, an unrestricted in Category 3 - Battle in the ruins and an entry in category 5 - All Lego Scene. Alternatively I could submit a bignette and restricted in Category 4 - The industrious motherland, an unrestricted in category 2 - Defend the camp/rescue the prisoners and an entry in category 5 - All Lego scene. Make sense? If not ask below! - Your entries should clearly state which category and size you are entering. - Your main or secondary character should be depicted in your scenes. - Each build MUST contain either the LoR digital banner (if you are having issues PM me and I will help/add it for you) or your faction banner in either digital or Lego/or both. We will be strict on this point for this GC. Entries without banners will be disqualified until they are fixed.Deadline
Midnight, Sunday August 20th, any time zone Scoring Personal
- Each entry will earn the individual the following points: Bignette: 2 points Restricted: 3 points Unrestricted: 5 points All-Lego: 4 points - Faction Finalists will earn an additional 5 bonus points for winning an individual category - Global Finalists will earn an additional 10 bonus points for winning an individual category Faction
This is where it gets interesting - and complicated. - Scoring for individual factions will be calculated as per normal. Teams- The Loreesi and Garhim scores will be added together to calculate the score for the Combined Roawian Forces. - Similarly, the Lenfel and Outlaw scores will be added together to calculate the score for the Free Forces of Roawia. Rewards
The team that scores the greater number of points will be declared the winner of the Fýrdraca campaign and will hold the ruins and southern peninsula of Fýrdraca. The winning team will discover an additional stash of gold within the ruins that was overlooked in the initial search. The gold will be divided equally between the two winning factions (for storyline purposes only). Factions will then have the following options. Winner Combined Roawian Forces: If the Combined Roawian Forces are victorious, they may choose one of the following options: Option One. Whichever faction (Loreos or Garheim) has the overall highest score, they may choose to occupy the southern peninsula of Fýrdraca and establish a settlement close to the ruins, the lower scoring faction will receive an additional 15 Global points OROption Two. Both factions may choose a new Island to claim and build a new settlement on if one faction doesn't want a new island and the other does, then the faction not claiming an island will be rewarded an additional 30 Global points. OROption Three. Both factions claim an additional 30 Global points and both Andarheim and Port Valiant will increase in size by two levels (without the normal additional points added for each level). Free Forces of Roawia: If the Free Forces of Roawia are the overall winner of the challenge, Lenfald will reclaim uncontested control of Southern Fýrdraca and the Free Forces may choose one of the following options: Option One. Lenfald may establish a settlement at the ruins which will begin at Level 2 and the Outlaws may establish a second Level 2 settlement in their GWI territory OR Option Two. Port Emerald will increase in size by two levels, Abnerburgh will increase size by one level and Port Scurvy will increase in size by two levels (without the normal additional points added for each level) and the Outlaws will gain an additional 25 Global points OR Option Three. Both factions may choose a new Island to claim and build a new settlement on if one faction doesn't want a new island and the other does, then the faction not claiming an island will be rewarded an additional 30 Global points. Yeah! Great writing, guys! Unfortunately, the categories for my plans don't mix with the Summer Joust, but with all next month free I hope to anyhow get three (or four) entries in! Also, this effect part is what we've been waiting for for ages! So awesome, time for the Outlaws to shine... and to get that stash of gold .

Great work! Some good storylines that is neutral to all factions and hopefully the competitive side will encourage participation. I hope to enter a minimum of two categories.
One small point - remind me, have natives been discovered in the GWI yet? There have been ruins discovered, but no natives, is that the canon version of events?

So, a total of 4 entries max? Just to clarify. The storyline outcomes sounds fascinating. Still wondering if Mark of Falworth survived... would be cool to see his adventures, which could fit into the GC, *hint hint* #needmoreMarkofFalworthstory

So it says for the Restricted entries 20x20 to 32x32. And for Unrestricted 48x48 minimum. Can I not build between 32x32 and 48x48? If so where would it go?

Can I not build between 32x32 and 48x48? If so where would it go? basically.... no The thought behind this is to prevent people building a 34x34 build and calling it unrestricted. Some of the original builders ( AK_Brickster, Sir Caelan Munro, thedonald13 etc) may correct me if I am wrong, but my impression was that the unrestricted category was always the category meant for the really big, all out impressive builds. Hence the value of 5 points compared to 3 for a restricted. 48x48 minimum always used to be the rule for GC, but it has been relaxed a bit of late. However, if enough people feel we need to review the way we define the categories, we can always do so.

Yeah that makes since, But for example an idea I'm thinking of now. 32x32 would be a bit small in my mind, but 48x48 I probably won't have the pieces for. If I feel a size in between fits the build better. Can I enter it into Restricted? I won't gain anything RP wise by making it bigger. I'm thinking around 40x40?

That's a good point. Setting the Unrestricted to a 48x48 minimum is good in theory, but the flip side of that coin is that it discourages those with smaller collections from even making the attempt. I know I rarely enter the Unrestricted - I maybe have entered four or five times total in the few years I've been here; it's only when the category is relaxed a bit that I even feel the opportunity to build for it. I can always enter the smaller categories, but they don't earn anywhere near as many points when one unrestricted equals a bignette and a restricted. On another note, great story and accompanying builds from you guys - it's great seeing members all of the factions working on the story updates and the faction alliance shake-ups this year have been a nice change of pace
