I started this last night and am looking for feedback. The objective is to build an Oblivion-style portal for lava monsters to pour out of. (The left column is just a placeholder) Hells Gate - WIP by Jordan, on Flickr Not sure if I totally love the direction this is going or not. It was a somewhat hurried start, as I was just trying to get something accomplished Lego-wise before the end of the evening. I'm going for the effect of the gate having pushed it's way out of the earth, hence the angled rock spires surrounding the columns (probably not totally apparent from this angle).

Perhaps if some of the pushed up rocks were larger and more jagged since the were recently upturned. Also different flame colors like orange might add to the look of the gate. Other than that it's a really good start and I can't wait to see what it turns into.

Not at the moment. I shifted gears to my main winter layout for now. Progress is going slowly. I only have an hour or two to work on it after work in the evenings, and have been swamped on weekends with summer activities. Start of football season, both NFL and my flag football league, isn't going to help my cause, haha. Hoping to get a good chunk done in a couple of weeks. I'm kayaking/camping this weekend, and have a cousin coming the next for a day, but should be able to blast some serious building on 9/4. Pretty funny that I have to schedule a build day for myself 2 weeks out, haha!

I think it is a very good idea (maybe cause i recently had somewhat the same idea and then stumbled over this thread Maybe we could share ideas for Lava Monster Stuff ) I dont know if I like the spikey design of it that much. For my portal I am planning to use transparent bricks mainly in orange, red and yellow to give it the lava look. Ofc then it is not something you can actually walk through. I like your idea with the flames going in weird directions.

I never did finish this because I was not happy with the results I was getting, and was in a time crunch (per usual just before BrickCon) to get more critical aspects of the layout built. I was going for an Oblivion-style portal, like this:

Ah okay You want to finish it? Or did u cancel the whole project? I thought about something like this: or like this: For portals in general i liked the idea of a build up portal. Natural looking portals are a bit weird in my eyes becuase a portal is always a summoned thing by magic power. And i think in this case a shrine or something to emprove the magic power to make the ritual possible is more believable.

That is a really cool version also. I was thinking of doing something with this basic circular structure and then adding spikes and flame to it: The black version of that angled plate is really cheap and I could easily crank out 2 or 3 of these to place at different spots in a collab, allowing the evil hoard to spill out all over the place

Yeah thats a nice Idea! It's more of a Shocktroop version of a portal I am planning a big version, just because its kind of the home portal for me and also my army is quite impressive I think i got over hundred of the monsters In my case it would look a bit silly because they all need to get through this mousehole of portal. My portal should be atleast 16 studs wide to get 4 troops in line. Also the Lava Monster from Power Miners should fit through it. That are my limits.

It sounds like you're going for more of a permanent portal that is regularly used to access another dimension, and mine is more of a summoned portal that is popping up during an invasion.
Good poibt about the size though. I have a red hulk who's part of the army and ill need to make sure he fits!

Ohh Red Hulk is a nice addition aswell! Also the red shehulk face should work very well! Are you also collecting the purple monsters or only the red ones?

Just the red ones. I will pick up a few of the purple fig parts just to make a couple of unique fantasy figs, but not planning on army-building them as I don't like them as much.
You should bring your horde to Seattle sometime for BrickCon. Between the two of us we probably have over 200 of them, and could overrun the entire castle section, MUAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah I very much like the idea to come to seattle with my figs...tho its very pricy just to get to seattle maybe in 2 or 3 years :'D I plan on picking some more of the armor parts of the ninjago snakes...I really hope they will get an army builder pack too!! Recently I made a couple of nice figs with the snake shields from the chamber of secrets. It looks really nice with the Snake armor from Ninjago! Maybe I will uplode some pics soon. When I set up my monster army I will definitely show some pics too Btw: What shields are u using for your monsters? I am using the shields from the Elves kobolds with the eye pattern! They work really well for me

Those would work well, I think. I only have a handful of them and I think as a "demon horde", I'm planning on them being a little more rag-tag and brutish, so heavy armor for the majority of them won't be needed.
