Hey all you BrickCon attendees!
BrickCon 2015 is October 1-4 this year.
I thought we could start spitballing ideas for our collaborative section.
In the non-Lands of Roawia realm, I believe there was discussion of doing a sky kingdom with a bunch of "floating" castles.
Is that still something that people are interested in?

Oh, and is there any interest in an LoR collaborative? I think other than Garheim, the factions are not too well represented here in the PacNW.

Yes, SquatchLUG (and anyone else interested) will be building floating castles, though I haven't yet sat down to design mine.

What is the basic idea behind the floating castles? One option (and this is what I prefer) would be to have them "suspended" using trans-clear elements, kind of like this: The other option would be to have them "attached" to the ground, but be built on some sort of pinnacle like this:

If we go with the former, it would be cool to get a blue tablecloth to represent the sky, and maybe we could get some dry ice or something to make some "clouds" on the tabletops that the castles are floating over.

Jubal's plan was to use some plastic or lexan or something, I think 5/8" diameter so that it has the same size profile as 2x2 round brick (and can thus be enclosed by 4x4 round brick with 2x2 round cutouts). His is suspended probably a foot or two off the deck. I can get more specific confirmation of the specs in our meeting Saturday night if you're interested.

I made a small island this weekend with a rope bridge to (theoretically) attach to a larger one, yet to be built. Building the upside-down rock part is quite time (and parts) consuming!
Also, I'm thinking that, unless the "suspension system" is incredibly stable, we might want to think about using some "guy lines" to help keep these things from tipping over. Tables are constantly being bumped or jostled by attendees and the public alike. It would be tragic to have one (or more!) of these sky castles topple over.
I'm thinking some 5 lb test clear fishing line, secured to the table with tape, might be a good idea. I will test out a few systems at home to see if this works or not.
Finally, my other "great idea" is to get a sheet of plexiglass and rip it into long strips, maybe 4" wide, and use them to build a perimeter around the display. We could then use a fog machine (I have one) or dry ice to make "clouds" on the tabletop for the castles to "float" above. This would take some playing around with to make sure it works, but I think it would add some good production value to the display!

About how far off of the table are the floating castles going to be? I was going to get some tubing cut and I wanted it to be the right length.

Mine will only be a few inches. I suppose it's really up to you, but keep in mind that shorter viewers won't be able to see anything but the underside if you make it too tall.

What could be cool if we had like a village under the floating castles. It would only work if the castles are more like 2 feet off of the table. There would be something that the shorter viewers could look at, and there could be ladders and stairs connecting the builds to the ground.

I'm not sure I like that idea. The idea of a "sky castle" to me evokes the idea of these things floating way up in the sky. Ladders and stairs connecting them to the ground means that they are not really floating all that high.

If you were wanting to 'anchor' them to the tape using wire or whatever, you could try and make it part of the build. i.e stick some clouds at the bottom of the wire (to hide the table tape). That way it might look like the castle is anchored to the clouds below? Just a thought.
