Global Challenge VII - THE REBELLION STRIKES BACK!
Leaders of the rebel forces had gathered in a hidden campsite, deep within the Dark Forest of Lenfald. Here, they had spent the last few days trying to decide if, when, and where they should begin the impending uprising.
"We have forces mustered at a hideout in the Sister Peaks" the Garheim general was saying. "Additionally, we have...."
"Sir, SIR!" A guard broke into the conversation. "Excuse me sir, but one of our scouts was handed a message by a member of the Queen's army!"
"Well what are you waiting for? Send him in! The general bellowed, his companions urging the same as the guard hurried out and returned a moment later with the rebel scout.
"Let me see that letter..." a Lenfel captain said, snatching it from the young lad's shaky hand. "What? This can't be right..." he muttered, "This letter is from our captured leaders, urging us to refrain from action, lest their lives be lost in torturous death! This is the last thing that I'd expect from them!"
"Forgery! Our Jarl would NEVER agree to such a letter!" the Garheim general boomed in disbelief.
"No, it's legitimate. Look, here are the signet seals of all three men. We must delay our troops from engaging at once!" The Lenfel set the letter on the table and turned to find someone to pass on the message.
The Garheim general, distraught at the idea of his beloved Jarl suggesting surrender, slumped back into his chair, utterly defeated.
With a quizzical look, the Loreesi baron reached for the letter on the tabletop and began to study it. He puzzled over it for a moment, his brow furrowing in deep thought, as if trying to recall something from years past. Suddenly, his eyes lit up.
"Hold on a minute, I think I see something..." he said excitedly. "Look, this ornate handwriting clearly belongs to the hand of Prince Lorean, but a few of the letters are oddly scrawled out, as if to give them some sort of emphasis.
"Hurry, get the guards to bring one of the Areani scouts in from the field. They may be able to make something of this."
A few minutes later, a tall, rugged man strode in, clad in black. He was one of the famed Areani, the elite military force of Loreos.
The Loreesi baron had been busy noting all of the odd letters while they were waiting, and he presented his findings to the scout. After what seemed like an eternity to the rebel leaders, who at this point were all crowded tightly around the table, the Areani spoke. His words were full of confidence and authority.
"My lords, this is clearly a secret message from the Prince. The code used is an old version of the one we Areani are currently trained in, and it is a little jumbled, I assume from lack of practice, but the message is clear."
"Well, what does it say, dangit?!" The hot-tempered Garhim cut in impatiently.
The Areani allowed himself a small smile. "It says that they are being held in the central tower, that the guards change every 4 hours, and that we must strike as soon as we are able."
"Ah, yes! The Lenfel commander chimed in, "The moon is but a sliver in the sky and will not be full again for a few weeks yet. This will give us the cover of darkness to launch our assault!"
"Well, men, I believe the time has come that we've all been waiting for." said the Loreesi baron. "Our rebellion, our push for freedom from the evil oppressor, Galainir, starts now!"
The Challenge:
The goal is simple; free Roawia from the grip of Galainir and Maldrake's tyrrany, and rescue the faction leaders who are being held hostage! Troops will be needed to both free the local towns, and also to assault the royal castle. You will have two options for this challenge:
Group 1 - Show your character fighting the Queen's troops on the mainland. Drive them from your homeland! Or, if you support the queen, defend a mainland stronghold! There is a chance that your character may be wounded (1 in 3)
Group 2 - Participate in the siege of the Royal Castle. This battle will be extremely perilous, since you will face the Queen and Maldrake head-on! Or, if you support the queen, defend the castle from the usurpers! There is a possibility that your character will perish in combat (1 in 6). There is also a chance that your character may be wounded (1 in 3).
Battle Outcomes:
Once you decide which group you would like to participate in, notify us by signing up for Group 1 or Group 2 in the comments below. We will then roll a die to determine your outcome in battle and will PM you the results, which should be kept secret until your entries are posted.
Group 1 - If you roll a 1 or 2, your character is wounded. You do not need to show this in your entry, but you will have to show it in a future build (details to follow).
Group 2 - If you roll a 1, your character perishes in glorious combat. This will mark the end of your current character. Your build should show your character's death. This is your chance to go out in a blaze of glory!
If you roll a 2 or a 3, your character is wounded. You may show this in your entry, but it is not a requirement. You will have to show it in a future build (details to follow) if you do not show it in your entry.
Scoring:
Vignette entries will earn 1 point for you and your faction (base size is 8x8 - no border and minimal overhang allowed)
Restricted entries will earn 3 points for you and your faction (base size between 20x20 and 32x32 - small border and reasonable overhang allowed)
Unrestricted entries will earn 5 points for you and your faction (base size 48x48 and greater - border and extensive overhang allowed)
Finalists will be selected from each faction for all three categories.
If you participate in Group 2 and survive, you will earn a 3 point bonus for your risk. If you perish in combat, you will earn a 5 point bonus for dying nobly. You will NOT be subject to a points reset.
The winning faction will be determined by the new scoring system. Votes cast for your faction's Vignette finalist will be worth 1 pt each. Votes cast for your faction's Restricted finalist will be worth 2 pts each, Votes cast for your faction's Unrestricted finalist are worth 3 pts each. The faction with the most points at the end of finalist voting will be the winner. Each category win is worth 10 global points for your faction. The overall challenge winning faction will receive an additional 10 bonus points.
Additionally, the faction who receives the fewest points will remain under control of the queen. If that faction is the outlaws, the Queen's forces will be completely removed from the mainland.
Individual Prizes:
Our "LoR Official Lurker", Bronx, has generously offered to sponsor the prizes for this GC. They are:
Overall Vignette Winner: A squadron of Black Falcon troops (pics to come)
Overall Restricted Winner: A platoon of Dragon Master troops (pics to come)
Overall Unrestricted Winner: Your choice of one of the sets below!
Details about your character's potential injury or death:
If you enter Group 1 or 2 and your character is wounded, you will not need to show that in the GC, but will need to build a follow-up MOC showing your character recovering from his injuries. You will also have the option to kill off your character by declaring your wounds to be fatal, without the normal "reset penalty". If you choose to do this, you must build a follow-up MOC showing your character's death as a complication of his injuries. See below for information about replacing your character. You will not earn the 5 point glorious death bonus if you choose to kill off your character voluntarily. Guild progress will be reset if you choose to kill off your character.
If you enter Group 2 and your character dies by rolling a 1, you will not be subject to the normal "reset penalty" that would occur if you kill your character off.
You WILL have a reset on any guild progress (after all, your character is now dead!)
You will be able to start a new character, but it must be in your same faction. If you wish, you may take on the persona of an NPC character you've previously created, or you may make someone entirely different.
You will receive a 5 point bonus for your noble death.
You must build a follow-up showing your character's funeral. It can be a simple burial, or a grand procession, depending on what suits your storyline. This could also be a good time to introduce your new character, if you'd like.
Results of battle will be determined by www.random.org. I will use the 5th random number generated as the result for each person.
Deadline: 4/28/14, any time zone.
