I'm guessing it's an experiment by TLG as to whether they can artificiality create demand seeing as the figure is neither particularly desired (I haven't see forums screaming 'when will they make a Lego highwayman!') nor rare (5 in a box).
So the interesting part for me is whether people will fall for the bait and be scooping him up in large quantities, either for collecting or hoping to flip for big money...
Personally - nice fig, cape looks usefully and pearl grey flintlocks might come in handy.

Gotta admit, I almost fell for it. Was feeling my way through a box and kept finding highwaymen (well they are 5 a box...) and wodered about their trade value... (which will be nothing, as everyone will have doubles). Picked up a dwarf, gladiator, fast food worker, circus strongman, french guy, 80's yuppie, Elf maiden. Few thoughts; Battle Dwarf - (difficult to feel due to small accessories, was the hammer that decided it (didn't find small legs that obvious to identify). I don't quite understand what the two-toned legs are meant to be representing, but nice to have. Gladiator - poor. No new pieces (hair is a re-colour), why didn't he have at least a shield? Seems to be missing some. Nice prints though. Fast food guy - this guy seemed to get all the accessories! (tray, drink, hot dog and bun) Though the tray doesn't have any studs to hold the food. Strongman - had my own version of this guy sitting around since the series 1 caveman, but it's nice to have an official one. More circus figs please. French guy - Got it for the dog. Bread is a bonus. 80's yuppie - Switched his hair out... I'll just leave this here flic.kr/p/UiuXiSElf maiden - Easy to identify due to the dress slope. Though my first cmf/lego set that had a missing part! No sword Though looks pretty good with the gold bow I replaced it with. More elves please.

Good feedback!
I grabbed a highwayman just because he's kind of a cool fig and someday I might try my hand at some pirates.
I agree with your opinion of the gladiator. There's really nothing special about him, though I guess it's nice to have another shirtless option for my barbarians.
Elf maiden actually made me say, "Wowwww" when I opened it. The shimmering printing is really great.

So we found a couple boxes at Walmart last week and felt out for a few. One we got that we didn't realize was the 80's yuppie... Now if you are into City and into retro figures this on fits the bill. From his brick cell phone to his hair and printing this Figure screams Miami Vice all the way. Another was the female Chef. Overall this is a great Figure and we will be getting a second for our modulars. Next we got 2 hot dog vendors, or fast food boy. Lego pulled all the stops for accessories with this one. Hot dog, bun, soda, and drink. As well as tray and the required hat. This figure was right on. The only down side is that there are no studs to hold the dog and drink on the tray. Next up is the Butterfly Girl, the figure is nice but where Lego hit this one out of the park is the printing on the wings! They are spectacular, a nice metallic pattern on a light purple/pink plastic is awesome. Definitely going to get a couple more if these. Next I found 5 elf maiden's. I have yet to open them, but I will be trying to get a few more. Next my wife got a dwarf warrior. She really likes him, I was not sold. However on closer inspection they did a good job on the printing, and I really like the double sided print on the hammer. I will be getting a couple more to scavenge parts. Lastly we found a highway man. Now I know a lot don't like this Figure. I however think the printing is very well done and fits in the pirate theme very well. I will be getting a couple more just for pirate builds. As of now that's all we got. We will be getting some more next weekend. We are still looking for the French dude with different, and I want to get some more multiples. All in all Lego serries 17 isn't bad. Definitely did a good job with the few that we do like.

I'm excited for the new hairpieces and heads. The figs themselves aren't super appealing, but plenty of parts to hit up BrickLink for later

Has anyone been picking up any of series 18? Got to admit, they haven't really excited me as much as previous series'. That may be the price hike (£3 in the UK) making them less of an impulse purchase, or the theme (I find the party theme bit goofy and less diverse) or the whole 'classic policeman' 1 per box situation (I just don't like artificial chase figs. Let's admit it, if he was 4 a box, there would probably be 3 left in every case you found). Picked up a few for parts (cake - though annoyingly the 'leg hole' is too tight for a normal 1x2 brick), cowboy (to see if I can do something with the horse). I got a coupon for a local drug store chain for $15 off of $50, so I set off to scoop some of these up. I ended up grabbing all of the dragons and unicorns I could find, and also grabbed an elephant, a cactus, and I think 1 cowboy. They were also discounted from $3.99 to $2.99, so I ended up getting a double discount on them.
I've yet to open any of them though, lol.

I forgot who the maker is of those. Maybe share a link? I have some but they are a little stocky-looking, just due to how much room the hip joint takes up compared to the leg length.

Try and keep up Ak! Yes the new range of Potter sets have brought some 'medium-sized' bendable legs. So they're not replacing the static short legs, but seem to be used for 'teen' characters in the HP range at least. Think they're currently available in black, blue and black with printing (Hogwarts robes). Hoping to pick some up when I see the CMF's in store. Full review here www.flickr.com/photos/whitefang_eurobricks/albums/72157693059507590 and on eurobricks. Also nice to see the new wand comes on a sprue with a spare.

So I am one lucky SOB. With this new serries of CMF out I was happy for all the parts and possibilities for castle and Victorian building. The one thing that bummed me out was the fact that the Mr. Graves mini is only one per case. Well went to a local Walmart yesterday and they had just put a new case of minis out. It was missing about 10 minis. So my wife and I did a blind draw of 8. Got some neat figures but no Graves. Well went back to the same Walmart today for some groceries and decided to give it another go. Needless to say another couple people had decimated the box. There were only 6 minis left. Neither of us thought the odds were in my favor for Graves. We bought what was left, and as my wife was opening the second to last bag all I heard was " there is no way... You lucky SOB... " And she kept repeating it... Well we got him! Neither of us figured this would happen. We thought I would be looking for the next few weeks, or I would have to pay out the nose on bricklink, but nope. This was shear dumb luck. flic.kr/p/MFrViY
