Grindel stepped up to the magical door and began chanting an incantation, swirling his wand over his head. Smoke and an intense orange glow begin to be emitted from the wand tip. “Stand back!” yelled the wizard. (Grindel submits 9 Magic)
The door began to shudder and shake, the magical energy that bound it together having lain dormant for centuries, now wrenched out of its slumber to resist the foolish warriors that attempted to breach it.
The glow strengthened and the goblish runes that were carved into the door shone brightly in the gloom of the dark room. “I can’t hold it! The magic is too strong!” the wizard screamed in panic. Sir Robyn stepped up and drew his sword, placing it just above Grindel’s wand “Keep going Wizard!, I’ll attempt to deflect some of the energy!” encouraged the brave Knight (Sir Robyn submits 3 magic).
The combined efforts of the Wizard and the Knight seemed to work, with the magical energy now being reflected back, off the Knights sword, and onto the door itself. (9+3=12. No negative points. Magic is resolved).
The door gave a final flare, and then the room when dark. The runes, having previously glowed and shone, now sizzle and crackled from the heat created by the magical incantation. Grindel breathed heavily, the exhaustion of the spell having taken its toll on the diminutive wizard. “Well done old boy!” cheered Sir Robyn, slapping Grindel sharply on the back “you did it!”. “Humpf! We’re far from through” replied the wizard, “Can you break it now Bandi? While I get my breath back...”
The hulking Barbarian stepped up to the huge door and sneered. His hands tentatively searched for a clasp point. The runes were too small for his fingers to get a grip, and other than that there were no handles or hinges. The barbarian growled in frustration and swung his hammer at the centre of the door. A cracked streaked up wall from the point of impact. (Bandi submits 6 strength...). “Yes that’s it!” shouted Grindel, now recovered from his previous exertion, “...do it again!”. Bandi swung his warhammer again, and another chip splintered off the stone door. Grindel pick up a stray weapon, that seem to lie around ruins and crammed it into the splintered crack in the door. “Now help me prise it open!” said the wizard, seemingly rejuvenated by the thought of being so near to the treasure. (Grindel submits 2 strength. 6+2=8. No negative points. Strength is resolved).
The wizard and the barbarian both strained as the iron weapon that they had put into the crack began to bend under the pressure. Then with an almighty crack the barbarian and wizard crumpled into a pile as stones crumbled and the door was temporarily obscured by a cloud of dust. (Bandi submits 1 Skill. Negative 2. 3 rolled. Skill resolved. Grindel submits 2 cunning. Negative 2. 2 rolled. Cunning is resolved).
The dust settled and the adventurers brushed themselves down and coughed their way through the cloud. The door had indeed crumbled, but climbing over the rumble they were soon surprised to find themselves in a room that they at first thought was full of sunshine. It was only when their eyes adjusted, having been in the gloom of the ruins of Fortaan for such a time, that they realised it wasn’t sunlight, but was indeed a great reflection. The glimmer and glow of the biggest treasure room each had ever seen in their existence...

The Treasure RoomThe adventurers marvelled at the sight before them. Rubbing their eyes and squinting at the glare, they should mouths gaping at the riches that glimmered and sparkled in front of their eyes. “We’re rich! We’re all filthy stinking rich!” exclaimed Sir Robyn. “Ha! My strength has been rewarded!” boomed Bandi “If it were not for me, none of you puny weaklings would have made it this far!” mocked the barbarian. “There’s more than enough for everyone” replied Grindel, “but where there are riches, there is danger... I fear our quest may not be quite at it’s end”. The wizard looked suspiciously around the room. “Who cares! We’re invincible! And I’m off to claim my treasure!” shouted Ardy the Halfling thief “... and I’m off to get that Dragon’s eye! Whatever it is” he yelled, bounding down the steps towards the vast piles of gold. “Not if I find it first you won’t” bellowed Sir Robyn, leaping down the steps after him. “I really must caution you about poking around with things you don’t understand!” warned the wizard. But his warning fell on deaf ears as the remainder of the party bundled down the stairs into the treasure room. Each of the adventurers began searching through the treasure, looking for the most priceless objects they could find. Gold coins, gilded weapons and crowns, gemstones as large as a man’s fist and more beside, they could not believe their good fortune. Many heroes had ventured into the belly of Castle Fortaan in the years that had passed since it’s ruin, but none had managed to journey this far. The adventurers soon forgot the dangers that they had previously faced, and overcome, and began to dream of the future that lay ahead... Visions of expensive clothes, ornate houses, glistening weapons and warm fires filled their minds as they sifted through the gold in front of them trying to fill any pocket or sack they could lay their hands on. But this room had not lain undisturbed for centuries without good reason. For deep beneath the gold lay their final challenge... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make an in character, in forum comment as to your characters reaction. The final challenge is a slightly complicated one, but I've tried to balance it and make it fair, but hopefully go out with a bang.

Sir Robyn stops half way down the steps, " What was that old boy? Smoke... I to smell something burning, much like brimstone, and what was that over there! I swear theres something in here with us moving around. An where there is smoke there is fire, with a hord this size and being un touched I say, those rune's were a warning. I remember something similar on one quest, and they read. 'Caution to those who travel here, for here be dragons, and you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!' .... I have a bad feeling about this."

Grindel sniffed the air. He was sure he could smell smoke. But then again it was probably the musk and dust of aroom that had been sealed for centuries. “Let’s make this quick, I don’t think it wise to over-stay our welcome” said the wizard. The adventurers spread out into the corners of the vast chamber filling their pockets with treasure as they went. Ardy was a discerning thief, he could distinguish real gold from fool’s gold, what tiny trinket was worth more than a larger object and so it was with this eye for value that he rummaged through the mountains of riches. He knew he would be able to carry anything too large, so he wanted to make sure the little he was able to carry was as valuable as possible. He threw aside coins and rubies searching for that one unique piece that would guarantee him a life of luxury. It was as he pushed aside yet another gold-edged shield that he saw something that changed his mind. In front of him was the largest gem stone that he had ever seen. The biggest gemstone, his mind suggested, that had ever been and ever will be in existence. The stone was a blaze of red and orange and must have stretched two cubits lone by one and a half cubits wide. He knew at once that this stone was worth more than anything he could hope to carry from this room, and then it dawned on him... was this the Dragon’s Eye? They had all been so overwhelmed by the riches in the room that the adventurers had almost forgotten the legend that had drawn them here. The Dragon’s Eye, a treasure so great that kingdoms and empires had risen and fallen for centuries in a quest for it’s ownership. And here it lay in front of the Halfling, his reflection shimmering in its reflective surface. He unwittingly let out a shriek “I’ve found it! I’ve found the Dragon’s Eye!” more as an exclamation to himself, than as a call to the others, for he had no desire to share it with them. At this point the other adventurers were spread throughout the vast chamber; each trying to select the limited treasure that they hoped would bring them their hearts desire. Bandi had decided on the ‘the more I take, the richer I get’ policy, and was relying on his immense strength to try and carry as much as he could. Grindel the wizard was sifting through items of varying antiquity in the hope of finding some ancient magical relic, and Sir Robyn had picked out a particularly ornate sword and shield that he thought would look fantastic above his fireplace. It was at this point, from their corners, that they heard the Halfling shriek with joy. High up on one the piles of gold stood the thief, staring intently at what at first looked like a mirror, then a fire, then a bit of both. It was Grindel, with his vast knowledge of magical items, who reacted first. “The Dragon’s Eye! He’s found the Dragons Eye!” the wizard exclaimed, his body almost shaking out of his boots. The rest of the party couldn’t decipher whether Grindel’s exclamation was one of extreme joy or horror but they were soon given an answer. “Whatever you do...” screamed the wizard to the thief “DON’T TOUCH IT!!!!”. Bandi shook his head. Not again, he’d had it up to the eyebrows with magical items. But his disdain was soon to turn into fear. The wizard’s warning came too late, as the Halfling thief was already using his sword to try and prise the giant gem out of its setting. “I’m rich! I’m rich! I’m rich beyond my wildest dr....” Ardy’s words drifted off as the gemstone began to shake and blaze with light. Ardy was the first to start running, as the gold mountain beneath his feet began to rumble and disappear beneath his feet. Sir Robyn, Bandi and Altar stood in awe as the blazing gemstone, which Ardy had coveted as his prize, rose and rose into the air, revealing itself to be planted firmly in the middle of a dragon’s forehead. A large dragon. A very large dragon. The gemstone shone and blazed, awakening the dormant magic of a thousand years, the magic that up until now had kept the guardian of the treasure in his ancient slumber.... Grindel swept up a couple of artefacts that he had been previously examining and turned to his fellow adventurers...“RUN YOU FOOLS!!” but they soon realised that running would do them no good. The dragon had already blocked their path to the exit, and the gold and other treasure rolled around the room like the waves on the sea as the dragon stretched his wings and fully emerged from beneath his glinting blanket of riches. They soon realised that their only way out, in fact their only hope of survival was to slay the beast. A task that many through the years had tried, and all had failed. Though after coming this far, none of the travellers wished to go home empty handed, and their thirst for wealth gave them a perhaps foolhardy sense of courage. They gripped their weapons tightly and launched into a last-ditch attack. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First things first – How to steal that treasure! Treasure stealing requires STRENGTH and CUNNING. STRENGTH dictates how many bags you can carry (ie submitting 2 STRENGTH allows you to carry 2 BAGS), CUNNING dictates what type of treasure you will take (ie submitting 5 CUNNING gives you 5 chances of getting something good).
Eg Colin the Barbarian submits 3 STRENGTH and 4 CUNNING. The dice is rolled 4 TIMES (for the cunning), and Colin gets to keep the TOP 3 scores (for the strength). A dice roll of 1=10 gold, 2=20, 3=30, 4=40, 5=50, 6=60.
If you have NO strength (or submit no strength) then you can only carry 1 bag (the barbarian gets +1 so can two on a submission of 0...) If you have NO cunning to submit, then you just get what you’re given on the first roll
But what’s the use in stealing treasure if you get killed by a dragon?...
Fighting the Dragon first requires BRAVERY. The person who submits the most BRAVERY will go first and so on. Attacking the dragon requires your character’s main trait (eg MAGIC for the Wizard) + one of the following traits MAGIC/STRENGTH/SKILL. The dragon has 25 points in each category and each adventurer will be attempting to beat the dragon in the category that matches their main trait.
Your defense strength will be 25 minus whatever your main trait and secondary trait add up to:
Eg Colin the Barbarian submits 14 STRENGTH and 6 MAGIC (14+6=20.) This means the dragon can only do a maximum of 5 damage to Colin on each of it’s attacks. Colin can lose between 1 and 5 health each attack depending on the dragon's dice roll.
Your attack strength will be the difference between the two traits you submit:
Eg Colin the Barbarian submits 14 STRENGTH and 6 MAGIC (14-6=8) so Colin can do a maximum of 8 damage on each of his attacks depending on his dice roll.
The first person to defeat the dragon in their specific category gets 50 bonus gold, the second 40 bonus gold and so on. Once the dragon is defeated in all categories then the heroes can escape with their treasure...
It’s a confusing one, so any questions or suggestions please use the sign-up thread....
EDIT: PLEASE READ THE ABOVE CAREFULLY, AND SUBMIT YOUR POINTS AS BELOW -
Gold- Cunning XX Strength XX
Dragon - Bravery XX Main trait (please state) XX Second trait (please state) XX

The final battleQuest 1 final challenge stats by andhe :-), on Flickr The dragon roared and shook the gold from his muscular shoulders. Being woken from centuries of slumber tends to make one grouchy, added to the fact that these puny human vermin were attempting to steal his treasure, and the adventurers found themselves facing a particularly angry dragon. “We will only survive this if we work together!” yelled Grindel the wizard, desperately assessing the room for another means for them to escape. “Spread out and focus your attacks on a different area to draw his attention away from each other!” instructed Sir Robyn, the seasoned warrior. Ardy screamed and yelped, ducking under the dragon’s tail as it swept across the room, scattering gold coins as it went. “Enough talk! Fill you boots and let’s kill this beast!” bellowed Bandi, already scooping up some of the fallen treasures and stuffing them into a satchel. Gold -The wizard was more discerning in his choice of treasure, discarding things of little value, knowing that he could only carry a small amount. (Grindel submits 4 cunning but no strength. Dice is rolled 4 times but can only keep best result. 5,3,4,1 rolled. Grindel gets 50 gold.)
Bandi on the other hand used his huge hands to indiscriminately scoop up as much gold as he could. (Bandi submits 4 strength but no cunning, so can keep the result of 4 rolls. 3,3,4,3 rolled. Bandi gets 130 gold.)A number of treasures had already taken Sir Robyn’s eye, and he tried to gather as much as he could carry (Robyn submits 3 strength but no cunning. 4,1,4, Sir Robyn gets 90 gold.)
Altar seemed to be frozen to the spot, in awe of the dragon. (Altar submits nothing. No gold.)
Ardy the thief had other things on his mind, namely the riches that lay before him, regardless of the potential peril. (Ardy submits 4 cunning but no strength. Dice is rolled 4 times but can only keep best result. 3,4,1,5 rolled. Ardy gets 50 gold.)The dragon roared and thrashed about the confines of the treasure room incensed by the brazen theft of his riches, his scales and wings smashing against the walls and supporting pillars causing bricks and mortar to rain from the ceiling and the room to shudder and shake. Dragon stats -
Magic – 25 Strength – 25 Bravery – 25 Skill – 25 Cunning – 25Each hero will attack the dragon using his main character trait (eg Wizard- Magic, Barbarian- Strength) and a secondary trait of their choice. The dragon’s attack will be 25 minus the sum of the hero’s points (eg Colin the Barbarian submits 10 strength + 4 magic. In this case the dragon’s maximum attack is 25-14=11.) The hero’s attack will be the difference between his two traits. (eg Colin the Barbarian submits 10 strength + 4 magic. The difference between his two traits is 6. So his maximum attack is 6).Sir Robyn was the first to attack (Robyn submits 6 bravery. So attacks first. Sir Robyn submits his remaining 12 bravery + 7 magic. The dragon’s maximum attack is 6 and Sir Robyn’s maximum attack is 5.)1. Sir Robyn darted round the dragon’s front leg and thrust his sword at it’s underbelly (maximum damage is 12-7=5. A one is rolled... Dragon loses 1 bravery. 24 remaining). The dragon thrashed out a claw in response striking the brave knight (maximum damage is 25-19=6. A 6 is rolled... Sir Robyn loses 6 health... 13 remaining).Bandi the barbarian, not to be outdone, also launched his attack (Bandi submits 5 bravery. So attacks second. Bandi submits 10 strength + 2 skill. The dragon’s maximum attack is 13 and Bandi’s maximum attack is 8).2. The hulking barbarian rolled out of the way of the sweeping claw and swung his large battle-hammer at the dragon’s chin. (maximum damage is 10-2=8. A 3 is rolled... Dragon loses 3 strength. 22 remaining). The hammer grazed the dragon’s chin, but also put Bandi directly in the path of the dragon’s flames... (maximum damage is 25-12=13. 10 is rolled... Bandi loses 10 health... 9 remaining). It was Ardy, the Halfling thief, who showed surprising courage in attacking the dragon next. (Ardy submits 4 bravery. Ardy submits 14 cunning + 6 skill. The dragon’s maximum attack is 5 and Ardy’s maximum attack is 8).3. Ardy slashed his short sword at the dragon hoping that it would make some impact... (maximum damage is 14-6=8. 1 is rolled... Dragon loses 1 cunning. 24 remaining). The dragon snarled at the insult to his mighty power and swatted the Halfling away (maximum damage is 25-20=5. 5 is rolled... Ardy loses 5 health. 12 remaining).Grindel, a wizard who was not unaccustomed to battling dragons stepped up. (Grindel submits 1 bravery. Grindel submits 12 magic + 5 strength. The dragon’s maximum attack is 8 and Grindel’s maximum attack is 8).4. The wizard summoned a spell that he had used previously on magical beasts, (maximum damage is 12-5=8. 4 is rolled. Dragon loses 4 magic. 21 remaining). While it did some damage, it was not quite as he had hoped. The dragon snarled and snapped at the wizard (maximum damage is 25-17=8. 2 is rolled.... Grindel loses 2 health. 18 remaining).Altar seemed to still be frozen to the spot. “Don’t just stand there, shot something boy!” boomed Sir Robyn, repelling another attack from the dragon with his shield. (Altar submits no points... Dragon’s maximum attack is 25....)5. Altar continued to stand rigid. His eyes wide in awe as the dragon reared his head above him. The dragon lunged at the ranger, Altar’s scream soon muffled by flames that shot out of the dragon’s throat. (maximum damage is 25-0=25. 21 is rolled. Altar loses 21 health... of 18. No health remaining). It was instead Ardy who screamed, as the ranger was burnt to a crisp in front of him (Altar dies)...
