The Locked Door
The heavy knight and broad-shouldered barbarian rammed their bulky bodies into the centre of the wooden door. It shuddered, but remained in place. “Put your back into it man! I thought you barbarians were meant to be strong!” sneered Sir Robyn. “Pah!” grunted Bandi, who secretly though he could have smashed the door down more easily on his own, than alongside the slightly lumbering knight.
The wizard watched was distracted reading some ancient runes on the wall, the ranger stood twiddling his arrows, inspecting the points, whilst the thief stood aside watching with interesting, all the while fumbling for something in his pocket.
Sir Robyn and the barbarian slammed again into the solid door. This time the frame moved. “See, we’re almost through. All it needed was a little bit more effort!” bellowed the knight. “Hurmmm” the barbarian snarled again, showing an immense amount of self-control.
“Err… do you think I might be of assistance?” enquired the Halfling. Everyone chuckled at the thought, until they saw the assistance that Ardy was offering. In his hand he held an old key. “Where did you pick that up boy?” asked the wizened wizard. “I found it back near the fear portal. Do you think it’s safe?” Ardy asked. “Of course it’s safe!” Grindel barked, chastising the thief “why didn’t you say something instead of letting us stand round here like frozen golems?!” “After all the ‘excitement’ I guess I’d forgotten I had it…” posited the Halfling.
“Well rather than stand and argue, how about we try it?” interjected the ranger, gesturing towards the door. The Halfling stepped up to the lock and inserted the key…
Strength 6 – 5 points submitted. Negative 1. Cunning 4 – 3 points submitted. Negative 1. Ardy uses his key…
TBC...

Continued... Ardy turned the key in the door. At first it seemed to stick, probably the result of a hundred years of rust, but then a bolt moved. And the door slowly creaked open. The adventurers wearily filed through the doorway. Apart from the giant spiders and Bandi’s brief brush with the fear portal the quest had been fairly uneventful. They began to wonder if the Dragon’s eye, a treasure that kings had fought over for generations, even really existed. Perhaps it was just the stuff of legend? A cold breeze soon snapped them back to the situation that was now ahead of them. They were stood in a large room, perhaps the remains of a splendid forum or banquet hall. The voices that had once echoed around its walls now lay silent and an eerie wind whistled around its cavernous expanse. In front of them lay their challenge. On what a had once been an elaborate tiled floor was now a gaping hole. The halfling thief was the first to approach it. “What on earth happened here?!” asked the Halfling, as he cautiously kicked a loose stone into the abyss, watching it disappear into the blackness. “Looks like bad architecture to me” suggested Sir Robyn. “Building castles on top of ruins and eventually something gives way. Mercy upon the poor souls that were stood here when it happened”. “I haven’t heard it hit the bottom yet…” Ardy said hesitantly. Altar stepped forward and peered over the edge. “Looks deep, could have been some bad magic, or a troll mine that caved in…” suggested the ranger “but either way, the only way across looks to be that bridge…” The party’s eyes fell upon the rickety structure that Altar had referred to as a bridge. It was in fact more of a combination of rope and wooden planks that had indeed had been constructed to cross the cavern. But referring to it as a bridge was perhaps mildly optimistic. The adventurers would have to cross individually if they stood a chance of it bearing their weight. But each crossing was likely to weaken the bridge for whoever crossed behind them... Rope bridge
Bravery – 5 Skill – 7 Cunning – 3--------------------------------------- PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR POINTS! Each hero will need to submit their own points (Via PM) to enable them to cross the bridge individually. Whoever submits the most BRAVERY points will cross first. If two or more players are joint I will roll a dice.
For every player that crosses, 1 SKILL point will be added to the bridge so it will require 8 SKILL for the second person to cross and so on (increasing to 13 SKILL for the final hero to cross). If a hero attempts to cross and after submitting their points, and any required dice rolls, there are still unresolved points, as well as the hero receiving ‘damage’ (as per normal), the bridge will also receive damage.
eg. Colin the barbarian submits 2 BRAVERY. Negative 3. Dice roll of 2. 1 point unresolved. Colin loses 1 bravery and the bridge now requires 6 bravery for the next person to cross…Please remember to sign your character name after your comments and PMs. For any queries, please use the sign-up thread. Good luck!

The Bridge
“Wake up, hey! Wake up old man”. The gangly patron had gone to the bar to refill his tankard and had found the old storyteller snoring at the table on his return. He banged the pint of mead down onto the table and the bearded gentlemen woke up “Eh, what? who? Where?” he spluttered, roused from his slumber. “You were half-way through your story old man” replied the tall visitor. A glint crossed the eye of the man with the large grey beard, “Ah yes!...” he continued “... the Quest for the Serpent’s Nose...!”. The visitor shook his head, taking a swig from his tankard “No... something about a Dragon’s Eye...?”. The old man chuckled, “Oh yes, the Dragon’s eye... now where were we...”
The warriors had ventured deep into the ruins of Castle Fortaan in search for the Dragon’s Eye, a treasure that Kings had sought and died for over hundreds of years. But the adventurers could sense they were nearing their goal. But they first had to cross a gaping chasm that lay in their path. The only route across was an aged and fraying rope bridge, which had been strewn across the cavernous black hole beneath. It was Brave Sir Robyn the Knight who was the first to pluck up the courage and step out onto its rickety frame...
Rope Bridge Bravery – 5 (+ any damage people do whilst crossing) Skill – 7 (+1 for everyone person that has crossed previously, + any damage people do whilst crossing) Cunning – 3 (+ any damage people do whilst crossing)
The bridge swayed and creaked, but seemed to hold his weight, despite the added load of his heavy armour. “Out of the way old man!” shrieked Ardy as he pushed passed the shocked Knight, and sprinted nimbly across the bridge. (Ardy submits 8 Bravery so is the first to cross). The bridge swung from side to side as Sir Robyn gripped the handrail and attempted to regain his balance. “You blasted fool!” he yelled at the Halfling, “you could have taken us both down to our deaths!”. Ardy seemed unperturbed and stood proudly on the other side of the bridge. “Well it seems to be safe enough!” he yelled back across the chasm. (Ardy submits 7 Skill, and 3 Cunning, so crosses safely to the other side)
Seeing the Halfling cross safely Bandi the Bold, living up to his name, was the second to push past the Knight (Bandi submits 5 Bravery, tied with Sir Robyn, but wins on a dice roll so crosses second). The rope bridge swung violently as the heavy barbarian trod clumsily from plank to plank. (Bandi submits 5 Skill, 8 is required as 1 person has already crossed the bridge. Negative 3. A 4 is rolled. Points are resolved). “Be careful you blundering oaf!” yelled Grindel the wizard angrily “..or there won’t be a bridge for the rest of us to cross!”. Just as the diminutive wizard shouted his warning the Barbarian stood on a rotten plank, causing his muscular bulk to crash through the bridge. “Aaaargh!” bellowed Bandi, as the wood splintered into his leg. The Barbarian hauled himself out of the hole and limped cautiously to the end of the bridge. (Bandi submits 1 Cunning. Negative 2. 1 rolled! Bandi loses 1 life – as he has no cunning remaining... and the bridge now requires 4 Cunning to safely cross).
“Well I hate to say I told you so...” mumbled Grindel, as he turned to Sir Robyn. “So do you finally want to take your turn?” asked the wizard to the Knight. “Humpf!” replied Sir Robyn, slightly put out by the Halfling and the Barbarian crossing in front of him. He steadied the bridge with his hand and stepped onto the first plank...

The Rope bridge continued...
Just as a reminder, the bridge stats are now:
Bravery – 5 (no current damage) Skill – 9 (7, +1 for Ardy and +1 for Bandi having already crossed. No damage) Cunning – 4 (3, +1 for damage caused by Bandi)
Sir Robyn bravely steeped onto the swaying bridge. Despite the Halflings confident dash, the knight was still uncertain how the bridge would respond to his added weight. Though the heavy barbarian had crossed relatively safely, Sir Robyn trod gingerly on each plank, testing his weight cautiously. (Sir Robyn submits 5 Bravery. Points resolved).
The rope creaked and strained under the weight of the stout knight and his armour. “Don’t look down!” the Halfling yelled from the far side of the chasm, in an attempt at some form of encouragement. It wasn’t received well. “Humpf!” Sir Robyn muttered and fumed under his breath. It was at this point that the knight did exactly what he’d been encouraged not to do, and looked over the edge. The dark pit seemed to extend rapidly beneath him, the cold breeze whistling through the chinks in his armour, chilling him to the bone. His head began to spin and he tightened his grip on the rope bridge. “Keep moving!” shouted Grindel from behind him, the wizard now eager to get across.
Sir Robyn steadily put one foot in front of the other, knowing he was not far from the other side. His grip on the hand ropes may have been a bit too tight however, as an attempt to re-balance himself on the swaying bridge put too much strain on the rope and it snapped in his hand. “Woohohohohooaaahhh!” the knight screamed as he began to topple over the edge... (Sir Robyn submits 5 Skill. Negative 4... 2 rolled. Sir Robyn loses 2 Skill. 2 Skill damage added to the bridge also).
The Knight toppled over the edge of the bridge, but was then surprised to find himself not falling into the pit as expected, but dangling upside down and staring into its dark depths. His foot had caught on the bridge and prevented his fall. (Sir Robyn submits 2 Cunning. Negative 2... 1 rolled! Loses 1 Cunning. 1 Cunning damage added to the bridge...)
“I told you not to look down...!” Sir Robyn heard the Halflings voice echo around the chasm and began to wonder why he had set out on this quest with such a bunch of flea-bitten scoundrels. The sturdy knight slowly hauled himself back onto the bridge and cautiously completed the rest of the journey. Relieved to finally be stood on solid ground he called across the remaining adventurers “Who’s next?”.
Grindel turned the ranger, who had remained silent ever since the party had begun their crossings. “Are you ok lad?” the wizard inquired. The ranger shook his head, but it seemed to be more of a response to their surrounding s than a direct answer to the question. Altar’s eyes were transfixed on the gaping cavern beneath the bridge. What he had failed to say, was now glaringly obvious to Grindel. The hardened ranger was indeed scared of heights...
“Well it’s too late for nerves, I’m going across, and You can either join me on the other side, or take your chances on your own...” said the diminutive wizard. Getting no response, Grindel turned and stepped onto the bridge....
Bridge stats are now:
Bravery – 5 (no current damage) Skill – 12 (7, +3 for Ardy, Bandi and Sir Robyn having already crossed. + 2 for Sir Robyn’s damage) Cunning – 5 (3, +2 for damage caused by Bandi and Sir Robyn)
to be continued...

The final crossing...
Just as a reminder ,the bridge stats are now: Bravery – 5 (no current damage) Skill – 12 (7, +3 for Ardy, Bandi and Sir Robyn having already crossed. + 2 for Sir Robyn’s damage) Cunning – 5 (3, +2 for damage caused by Bandi and Sir Robyn)
The wizard stepped onto the creaking rope bridge leaving the ranger as the last member of the party stood on the nearside of the chasm. He huffed and puffed as his short legs stretched from plank to plank and his hands gingerly crept along the handrails. Sweat dripped from Grindel’s forehead as he tried not to look down and instead tried to recall if he knew of any ‘floating spells’ that could counteract a thousand foot drop... (Grindel submits 2 Bravery. Negative 3. Dice rolls 1... 2 remaining... Grindel loses 2 Bravery. 2 Bravery damage added to the bridge).
The majority of the adventurers waited impatiently on the far side of canyon. It had taken far too long for them to all cross the bridge and they were keen to continue towards the castles central keep. It was at this point the Grindel missed a step. “Gaaaarrrgh!” screamed the wizard as he tumbled facedown onto the bridge. (Grindel submits 4 Skill. Negative 8... Dice rolls 4. 4 remaining. Grindel loses 4 Skill and 4 Skill damage is added to the bridge).
The wizard was relieved to open his eyes and discover he wasn’t falling through the infinite blackness but instead merely staring into it through a gap in the bridge. His large pointed hat had wedged his head between two broken struts. Grindel sheepishly picked himself up and dusted himself down and redoubled his efforts to get to the end of this blasted bridge. (Grindel submits 2 Cunning. Negative 3. Dice rolls 5. Points resolved. Grindel crosses safely to the other side).
The bridge stats are now: Bravery – 7 (5, +2 for Grindel’s damage) Skill – 17 (7, +4 for four adventurers having already crossed. + 2 for Sir Robyn’s damage, + 4 for Grindel’s damage...) Cunning – 5 (3, +2 for damage caused by Bandi and Sir Robyn)
Four of the adventurers now stood on the far side with Altar the only member remaining on the near side. The ranger knew that turning back was not an option, but was frozen at the thought of standing over that pit. A ranger’s training was to deny all fears but that seemed to fade into insignificance fro Altar in this moment. He closed his eyes and stepped onto the bridge. “I am a warm breeze in a summer meadow...” (Altar submits 0 Bravery... Negative 7. Dice rolls 3. Altar loses 4 Bravery).
The ranger could feel the bridge creak and sway under his weight as he continued his crossing. “I am on a boat on the Sea of Cronneras...” (Altar submits +1 Skill. Negative 16. 6 rolled... Altar loses 10 Skill). The bridge violently swung from side to side as the ranger felt his way along with his hand and feet, his eyes still firmly shut.
“He’s going to topple off!” yelled Ardy as saw the ranger struggling to balance himself. Hearing the Halfling shout snapped the ranger out of his trance. “I am a young stag running through the... yaaaaarrrghhh!!!!” the normally subdued ranger let out an uncharacteristic shriek as his eyes opened and he saw the drop beneath him. The bridge gave a final swing and then snapped....
Rope and timber that had spanned the chasm for over a hundred years now began their descent into the pit below. The ranger felt his body begin to sink as the bridge beneath his feet now no longer bore his weight. He scrambled desperately for the safety of the far side. (Altar submits 0 Cunning. Negative 5. 3 rolled. 2 remaining. Altar loses 2 Cunning... as he was already on 0 he loses 2 health...)
Altar felt his descent abruptly stop. He looked up to see Bandi’s large hands gripped around his cloak. Behind the Barbarian stood the other adventurers. Sir Robyn holding the barbarian’s left leg, Grindel and Ardy holding the barbarian’s right leg. Together they hauled the ranger back onto safety of firm ground. They sat briefly on the ground, neither of them saying a word. After a brief moment which seemed like an eternity Grindel stood up and spoke “Onward”. And so in turn the rest of the party also rose to their feet. What had happened would remain unspoken, but perhaps a deeper bond had been formed than any of them wished to admit.
