The tavern had been busy all day with travellers taking shelter from the chilling winds that passed through the area this time of year. An old man with a large beard sat in the corner watching the patrons come and go. As evening approached the embers on the fire began to glow and only a handful of customers remained, warming themselves by the hearth before they too headed home on this cold winters night. An icy north wind blew into the tavern as one of the few remaining patrons opened the door to stagger home. A barmaid was collecting tankards for the wash as a gangly fellow left the bar and sat himself down in front of the old man. The older man had a hook for a hand, a wooden leg and an eye-patch, but despite his seeming ailments there was still a vibrant twinkle in his good eye. "Tell us another story old man" the gangly fellow asked, plonking two tankards of ale down on the rough table, "One for the road...". The old man gave a toothy grin through his large beard and gripped the tankard with his good hand, straightening his back. "Have I ever told you the one about the quest for the Dragon's eye?" he ventured. His eye sparkled as if he was recalling some distant glorious memory. Two other drinkers, intrigued by the scene, gathered round. The old man began. "The castle of Fortaan had stood for almost half a millennia before it was happened upon by five seasoned adventurers. Those rugged stone walls had seen many a kingdom rise and fall but they had now lay in ruins for almost a century before rumour spread of the great treasure hidden within its mighty stone belly. A treasure that had given great power to its bearers, but brought with it great danger. A treasure that became known as 'the Dragon's eye'... ----------------------------------- Please submit your character and stats if you haven't already. The adventurers stood before the towering ruins of Fortaan. Though abandoned by civilised man for many years the castle was by no means empty. Home to goblins, ogres and other terrible beasts, little did the travellers know of the trials and terrors that lay ahead of them. But they were by no means a fool-hardy party. Each one of them bore the scars of previous quests, battles and victories, though the reasons for them now joining together on this particular quest have since been lost to the passing of time. They were ....
Grindel Cragtooth - a wizard diminutive in stature, but but commanding a strong magical power. Bandi the Barbarian - a hammer-wielding hulk of a man. Brave Sir Robyn - a dark knight with a darker past. Altar of Cronneras - a ranger. Skilled with an arrow and fleet of foot. and Ardy the Halfling - a wily thief who could move like a shadow. They crossed the decaying drawbridge and entered a cavernous room, the crumbling ruins of what had once been a glorious entrance hall. Disturbed by the visitors, bats screeched and scattered from their home in the rafters causing the adventurers to flinch and tighten their grip on their weapons, betraying perhaps a greater admission of fear than they had hoped to reveal. At the end of the hall lay two passages and their first decision. Would they venture left or right? ----------------------------------- Make an in forum, in-character comment on whether you'll choose the left or right passage. " Right or left, Left or right... what say you, you say? Well lets look at it this way Alter, thinks we should go left but for what reason? Grindel has Magically devined that we go right. And Ardy says he is a theif with the most experiance looting... says we go right... well now this is certinly a cunundrum, however as I have sat here pondering which direction we go, I use the best sence of all... the sence of smell. It is far less foul smelling on the right... So I say we take the "Right" path..."

The adventurers chose the path that went to the right and found themselves in long stone corridor, clearing the cobwebs from the entrance as they entered. Water dripped from the walls and an eerily cold breeze whistled around their ankles. Bandi the Bold sniffed the air “Smells bad...” he grunted. He was right, there was a definite smell of decomposing flesh. The party moved on and investigated the pathway ahead. There were two possible exits and again they would have to make a decision as to whether they would turn left or right, but it was Altar the ranger that noticed the danger first. He slowly stretched his bow and pointed his arrow to a corner in the ceiling “SPIDERS!...” he whispered to the others. But his stealth was unnecessary, as the giant spiders had watched the adventurers every move from the time they arrived in their lair and disturbed their web. The arachnids slowly descended from the ceiling, poisonous venom dripping from their fangs... Spiders!

Those buggers sure are ugly. They really don't look very fast though, I'd wager we could easily dodge them. My knife has this one's face written all over it. ~Ardy

Spiders! The giant arachnids slowly descended from the ceiling, paralyzing venom dripping from their fangs. The adventurers cautiously retreated into the middle of the room. "Do we just stand here? Or do we FIGHT?!" yelled Bandi the bold, breaking the tension and swinging his battle hammer above his head. He lunged at the nearest spider, crashing his hammer down into its snarling face. Spurred on by the barbarian's lead the other members of the party launched their attacks on the remaining spiders. Sir Robyn lived up to his name by bravely slicing off the leg of another spider, then plunging his sword into its chest as the beast collapsed towards him. But it was Altar who proved that his renown as a ranger was not unmerited. He adeptly leapt onto the abdomen of the remaining beast and released two arrows into the back of its head. The spider slumped down dead, the arrow heads protruding from its venomous jaws. The battle was swiftly over. Strength 44 points submitted. ResolvedBravery 76 points submitted, negative 1. 3 rolled. ResolvedSkill 65 points submitted, negative 1. 3 rolled. Resolved
Cunning 32 points submitted, negative 1. 1 rolled. ResolvedGrindel Cragtooth muttered a charm and his staff lit up, illuminating the room “Are we all here? Where’s that daft halfling thief?” he enquired. “I believe I have found him…” replied Sir Robyn, and gestured to the ceiling with his sword. In the melee it appeared that poor Ardy had been strung up by one of the spiders. Grindel directed his illuminated staff towards the web-covered body that dangled from the rafters, “Is he alive?” the wizard asked. “We can soon found out..” replied Altar. The ranger fired an arrow at the web, accurately slicing through it and Ardy fell to the floor. “Wha.. what happened?” the halfling asked, as he staggered to his feet, still drowsy from the soporific effects of the web. The other adventurers shook their heads disapprovingly and muttered, especially the barbarian who mumbled something about how good his mothers ‘halfling stew’ used to taste. “Well… now that we are accounted for, it appears we need to make another decision… and seeing as our ranger saved the day, why don’t you lead us on Altar?” suggested the old wizard. The ranger nodded his head. There were two exits to the chamber, would they go left or right? ---------------------------------------------- As Altar submitted the most points combined I am giving him the chance to make the next decision. Left or right? For any other comments or queries, please use the sign-up thread.

The ranger chose the path to the right. After the damp gloom of the spider lair they were please to find the corridor led upwards and away from the coldness of the lower ruins of Fortaan. They now proceeded more cautiously however, slightly embarrassed by their previous blunder into the spiders web. Rats returned to their holes and lizards scarpered from the walls as they were disturbed by the adventurers’ slow ascent in search for the Dragon’s eye. The corridor eventually led out into another room. This time however it was empty. A few broken crates and barrels lay around, the remnants of previous occupants. ---------------------------------------------- If you personally wish to explore the room you may submit 1 cunning to do so. Post an in forum, in-character comment declaring that intent. Eg: Colin the Barbarian gazed around the empty room. “Well there at least might be some food around here!” as he trundled off into a corner. (1 cunning)
