Recently I started finding some time to continue working on my modular castle. I have pulled apart the old gatehouse and start working on a new one. What you see here is the base of it. I know... I know ... I still need to push the bricks harder together to get rid of the cracks I also need to find my other banner Btw, the draw bridge and the portcullis is fully functional. The draw bridge was the biggest PITA as I had to synchronize both chains to work in parallel with each other from one pulley being turned.

So I'm trying to figure out where to go next with the gatehouse. I'm semi disappointed in myself that I did not push the portcullis one or two studs in thus giving room in front of the moving portcullis to put a set of windows or view ports above the gate and allow for room for a minifig to "patrol"... So... now I'm toying with an idea of widening the upper level so that there is more room there.... Not sure how wide I want to make it and if I want to make it even between the towers and the area above the gate or make the area above the gate stick out more and towers less or vice versa....

Yes techniqly it should protrude past the gate. Also alot of times there are "Muder holes" in the walk way so rocks, large steal balls, hot tar/oil could be rained on those below trying to attack the gate. Its looking good so far though keep it up

Really liking the look of it so far - I'm especially interested in the drawbridge mechanism

I'll take somw pictures of th drawbridge mechanism when I get a moment. Rough description is two gears on each side. Each pair is upper/lower gear driven by chain link and right and left sides connected with axles Anyways here's what I'm considering on doing with the sides flic.kr/p/qxDU8cI'll build them out. since there is a drawbridge not sure about a murder hole I think they were more commonly used when there was no drawbridge In the top level you can see an axle and the link mechanism flic.kr/p/qMPNCQHere's a close-up flic.kr/p/qxys5UI'll have to wait for better light to get the inside pics of how the chain attaches to the lower axle. Anyways the chain wraps itself around the axle as it turns.

Here's a couple more of the mechanism. You can see the mechanism (pics are upside down btw). Top gear connects to an axle that goes from one side to the other. Lower axle is only for each side and has a piece to which the chain connects on each side.

Here's how I'm thinking about widening thr gatehouse for the towers flic.kr/p/qS3YwTit will widen the structure by two studs in each direction.

Ok, I think I finally am there. I just wish that I had grey sculpture pieces rather then sand colored ones.....

Gray would tie it togeather best for sure I have a couple from sets I parted out. Nice work overall and keep going. Also the murder hole would probably still be there for hot liquid's with the draw bridge. Cant wait to see more.

Inspired by Frumpy's drawbridge I started playing with the concept.... I have to say that it ends up looking pretty cool! A lot better then the plain ol' plate based one...
