Hey, Garhims! Here's my Heroes Guild Master 3 entry.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-The Way of the Bow-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Tytos knocked another arrow onto the string; the shortbow felt good in his hands. Solid, yet flexible. In one motion, he raised the bow and pulled the arrow back to his ear, then held it there for a few seconds. He closed one eye and focused the other on the center of the target fifteen yards from him, he let the arrow fly...
...and watched it sail right over the circle of wood only to splinter against the side of the castle and clatter to the rough stone path to his right.
"What did I do wrong this time?" Tytos asked exasperatedly as he turned to the two knights on the other side of the well.
"You're still closing one eye," Caedric responded good-naturedly. "Keep both of them open next time. You never want to take your eyes off of your target." Caedric Moore - the Commander of the Valeguard - had spent the morning drilling the Valeguard's newest potential initiate on the ways of archery at the behest of one of his captains, Sir Hollander Peake of the Wulfguard. He had sent Peake to the neighboring province of Lenfald- "Nation, now," he reminded himself - the year before to the town of Stonehedge to gain information on the islands to the west and Hollander had returned with a young Loreesi named Tytos Jorin who until then had been held captive by the Lenfels. Hollander had promised the boy safe passage back to Loreos, should he desire it, and the Commander would have made good on his offer had the young Loreesi not expressed a desire to remain in Garheim. Caedric acknowledged the boy's potential as a squire, bard, or herald and had taken him as a page for the remainder of the year until he could "grow into his feathers". The following autumn had come and it was time to test young Jorin's abilities and - potentially - induct him into the Valeguard as an initiate.
Caedric had Hollander set up a target in one of the courtyards of Ulchabhan Castle at the base of a tower next to a well where the servants and cooks of the castle gathered water. They had started with the basics, but it seemed a more practical approach was necessary. "Peake. Show the boy how it's done," he said with a smirk and ushered young Tytos to his side. The big knight took a few paces past the well - further than Tytos had just been - and sent an arrow down range to stick quivering in the center of the board.
"You have to envision it, lad," Hollander said, striding back to the two with a slightly smug look on his face. "Keep both eyes on the target and picture the arrow striking it in your mind. But don' worry, boy," Peake said with a smile. "If you don' get it this time, we can try sparring with a blade, next."
