David, I am eagerly awaiting your constructive criticism. I know it will help!
Thanks Sean, for the idea of a lantern holder, I quite like that. I have been using the masonry bricks in high doses and in some areas, then throwing in quite a few regular bricks to break up the monotony. As of now, I have used about 1/3 of my total masonry bricks. Do you guys think they are being used too frequently? I know they invoke a sense of realism, but is there such a thing as too many of them? I am sure there is.
I am considering scratching the two guard huts on opposite ends of the wall, and instead building four corner towers that are around 5-6 studs high. Any input would be appreciated.
I have replaced the brown tiles with black on the gates. I honestly don't like it as much (I think brown/dark brown look much better personally), but I realize for realism it is much more preferred.

I like the use of lots of masonry bricks, but you're gonna have to make sure that they follow a similar pattern the whole way round, and don't be used more sparingly as you begin to run out!

Hogwash. If you like the look of brown, pink, or neon green, then go for it! The black was just a suggestion. If it looks bad, try something else!

Wow, this is looking really good, I can't wait to see the finished product! I, too have never built a real castle. I have built sections of castle wall, and I have a watchtower build planned, but I have never actually built a full castle, simply for the reason that I don't have enough parts. I would love to sometime, just as of now I don't have sufficient supply, not to mention not very many masonry bricks unlike somebody (I'm so jealous). BTW, those doors are lookin great, keep up the good work!

Thanks guys, for your kind comments!
First off, I feel guilty. I opened my son's birthday present (I will replace it with a new one!) for convenience. DUPLO just makes everything easier.
Some drastic changes to the build have taken place. As I got to experimenting with the Keep size, I just didn't like the location in proximity to the gates. It just cramped everything up, and made little room for any of the features originally planned within the wall. I have relocated the keep to the back right corner of the walls to give some breathing room for the smithy and stables. Maybe it will also make this a little more original and unique (not necessarily better) .
As I previously mentioned, some details had to go because the castle is just too small. So the dungeon is incredibly cramped for this hairy Garhim varmint and built into the original wall.
That stickered brick is totally getting moved now. It would have originally been covered up by a building, but now it's out there in broad daylight. It no longer has a place in this build lol. This room is the base of the keep. You can see the outline of the keep on the wall above (it ends up being a 16x16 and will span 3 floors).
Two things to note: 1.) If I am updating this too frequently with too many pictures, I do apologize and will slow down! 2.) Most of these pictures have been taken between 12am-2am. Every night I spend an hour or so, doing a little more building. Being so dark (and me being so tired!) the picture qualities are darker and fuzzy. When completed, I will photograph this in sunlight with a tripod

The stickered brick won't be noticeable once you've enclosed the dungeon, FYI. I wouldn't bother with the hassle of removing it, if I were you!

I like how you are logging it so frequently! I love to see builds come together, I want to do this with one of my builds sometime.

Big Update. Had about 3 hours tonight to put some major work in this. Lower walls are finished. Working on Keep now, followed by structures inside of walls, then tiling everything up.
I have to be honest, I had no idea how parts intensive something even as small as this would be!
The walls will look much better when I tile the floor. I don't think I have enough tiles, I am going to have to order some. Perhaps I have gotten in over my head, but this has been rewarding so far. I hope to have the build finished by Mid-April.

I like the solution you've found for the door. Looking forward to see how it will turn out!

Following the construction of this castle over time is great fun. I like they way you are opening your whole building process for feedback good. I recognise the late night night building in the dark (small children is my reason). My only advice at this stage is maybe do a stud based 1:1 design of your keep on paper first to see how much it room it needs. Then you will know how much room you have left for other buildings. That is what I do. You can do this when you have no time to get the bricks out if you have to deal with kids etc.

I think it would like really nice and realistic if you added some wooden sections, maybe on the gatehouse.

Nice Schmidt! I'm liking it so far! I would suggest putting towers somewhere, they don't even have to be tall, just higher than the walls. I look forward to the complete build!

Oh, yeah, a Tudor/wooden section would look awesome.
