Just thought I'd post this here for you all to enjoy, if you haven't already seen it on Flickr.
Ominous Signs
---------------------------
"We are approaching pad 4, setting up for final approach."
Peter's voice startled me out of the stupor I was in. I sat up and stretched, looking down the length of the Atlantis, at the rest of my squad. Serge looked over at me, and smirked.
"What?" I asked, before noticing Alexandra had fallen asleep with her head on my shoulder. I glared at Serge, who just sat back with a grin, then gently shook Alex awake.
"Ooh, what is it?" She asked groggily, squinting up at the lights on the roof.
"We're here." I said. That brought her fully awake. She blushed, as she realized she'd laid her head on my shoulder, and quickly sat up.
"Finally." She looked over at me.
"Why do think they activated the distress signal?"
"I don't know, but it was probably just an accident, and someone's waiting on the pad to tell us, and apologize." I said, hoping I was right.
Seconds later, my hopes were dashed.
"Guys," Peter's voice was worried over the intercom, "I'm not seeing anyone down on the pad, and I see definite signs of neglect."
We all exchanged glances.
"So much for it being an accidental triggering." Andrew commented. Jarlson leaned forward in his seat, a frown etching his face.
"Not good," he said. "Not good at all. Thurgood was just starting to produce high-qaulity minerals. They would never let their pads get overgrown. They are their lifeline." He looked around. "I don't want to jump to conclusions, but we might want to change how we approach this."
I nodded, and looked at my friends.
"Right, standard area-clearing operating procedure. Uldia, you and Serge out first, go to the left-top and left-bottom corners. Andrew, Bill, you two take the right-hand side. Alex and I will go out next, the rest of you follow us. All of you, look for possible hostiles." They nodded. We all stood, grasping handles on the roof, and waited for touch-down.
Seconds later, the Atlantis landed. Uldia and Serge disembarked first, followed by Andrew and Bill. Then I headed out, sub-machine gun held at the ready. The first thing that hit was the the humidity. The air was heavy, and sticky. I walked towards Udia, as first Alex and then Jarlson emerged behind me.
"Anything?" I asked Uldia. Without stopping scanning the jungle, she replied.
"Nothing. Not even anyone from Thurgood."
"No vehicles coming?"
"Nope. Not a sign."
I turned and walked to where Alex and Jarlson were standing, in the relative shade of the Atlantis's shadow.
"No sign of anyone, and no vehicles approaching." I said, removing the helmet from my head, and wiping sweat off my brow.
"They can't have missed us coming in," Jarlson said. "We flew right past the colony."
Alex gestured to some plant life growing on the pad.
"No one's been here for at least a month, maybe more. Maybe no one even saw us come in."
"What do you think happened?" I asked Jarlson. He shook his shaggy head.
"Not sure, but we need to go to the colony, seeing as no one's going to come out here, and find out." I nodded, though considering the obvious signs, I didn't relish doing it. Alex looked around.
"I don't see any vehicles sitting about." She noted.
"Great," I said, "Guess we're walking."

Here it is, one of my favorite MOCs I've made, finally posted. Some of you might have seen this before, as it was displayed at BrickFair, and was featured in dad's landscaping seminar. Also, I hope you all liked the story, considering it's a sneak-peek of my science-fiction novel that I'm writing.
Cheers!
