Should I purchase this set?
The 2011 Kingdoms set, "Mill Village Raid" is considered by many to be one of the top Castle sets ever sold. I am very interested in this set for multiple reasons.
1.) It has two, count 'em, TWO goats! 2.) Good looking techniques 3.) Other neat animals including 3 chickens, a dirty pig, and an awesome unique horse. 4.) 3 dragon knights 5.) Nice peasant figures 6.) All around good pieces 7.) Villagers defending themselves in comical ways
Overall, I think these are a lot of reasons to purchase this neat little set. But the main reason, is reason #1. I really want some goats, but am not at all interested in dropping $10.25 (USA, pre-shipping costs, pre-"additional costs" and hidden BL seller fees) PER GOAT. While looking at these goats, I ended up going to the set itself, which is being sold for around $85.00 pre shipping. I imagine with shipping we are looking at upwards of $95.00 USD for over 600 pieces. Is this a worthy investment at such a high price? I'd really like to own this set, but I am unsure if I would want to own it at that price. Unsure if TLG will ever release the goat animal again, I feel the price of the goat will not go down.
I would appreciate any thoughts!

Well the set itself is excellent. I got the set with just the two buildings, no animals or minifigures for a great price. For the pieces that the set comes with, it is a great investment as some of the pieces are somewhat rare and very useful to castle builders. $95.00 though is a steep price.... I guess you would have to budget it out and see if you have the money for it. If you do get it, you won't regret it. This is one of the most useful Castle sets sold for pieces and minifigs!

I'm not sure where you are located so this may not be feasible, but I'd call the big Shop in LEGOLAND California before you buy. Last time I was there (about a year ago, but still long after the set was retired), they had them sitting on the shelf at regular retail price.

I just "ponied up" and bought the goats and horse separately. I think I got mine for $6.50-$7 each, and the horse wasn't too bad. I'd rather spend the $20 to get the few parts I really want and save the $70 I would have additionally spent on the set to buy something else.

Thanks guys for the responses.
Alice I live on the eastern part of the country or that would work. The next time I am in LEGOLAND Florida, I will have to check.
I think I will probably add the goats to my wanted list, with a price checker everytime someone places them in their store. Thanks all.

I got mine off Bricklink and love it. I agree, goats are special but the horse is also great. Also chickens. Don't forget that ladder, love ladders. Excellent set. I have that set sitting with my 10193-1 Medieval Market Village. Very nice. Did I mention the ladder?

Is that price for a new set? Might you be able to pick up a used one cheaper? I do own this, and whilst it's not near MMV level of greatness, it does come with a lot of unique selling points. I found it odd that TLG FINALLY produced a grey horse, and a printed one at that, to then move on to a new horse design immediately after. I'm also surprised the goats haven't turned up in a city set yet either. Even the chickens have been used sparingly. Though I guess CITY is focused on forest stuff at the moment, so we may see the animals reappear if they shift back to some farmyard sets in the future. $95 doesn't seem that much really, though maybe us europeans are just used to paying higher prices in the first place. RRP was £66 which is over $100... (USD rrp was $66... which is about £40... and was around what I got mine for on sale) so maybe you should just count yourself lucky that you're not in this dilemma more often

If you can get it cheap, I say go for it! My friend has it, and it's pretty awesome, being rather different from many other castle sets.

I want the goats, but I'm just going to be honest. I can't bring myself to drop $15.00 on these guys a piece. That is ridiculous!

15 bucks? You've goat to be kidding me! I have this set, it is nice but it ultimately ended up as a victim of cannibalization: I used its parts in many of my MOCs and never rebuilt it (so far).

Well I managed to find the set for $75.00ish shipped. I pulled the trigger. I had previously ordered two bricklink goats, but I figured my collection had enough room for all 4

To be honest Schmidt...I hate goating you on about this subject and I would hate to goat about having four goats...but you should just get the set for the goats...GOATS!!! GOATS!!! Either way...I would pony up the dough and get the set...because as you pointed out many have said it was an excellent set and well it came with goats...which I never realized were so rare till you mentioned it. Either way...I love the set and well I bought two originally on sale for about $50 each. Worth the investment at the time...I used one for parts and still have the other assembled because its just that good of a set. I will check around and see if I can help though in the bargain department to find you a good price.
