After his reunion with his father, Mattius set about building up the fortifications at Fort Renii which protected the small colonial military town of Spera. He knew that this town and fortification provided a way to strategically watch the bay across from the Colonial Capital of Port Valiant. As such, it was part of his mandate to build up the town and fortifications to provide a bastion for security. Of course, this also meant a great way to expand the Loreesi economy by offering increased amounts of dairy cattle to produce more cheese for the people back on the mainland. This is my entry for the current LC XXIV. It depicts Mattius on the rampart overlooking troops as they patrol the more robust fortifications.

Name: Harold Gardener Gender: Male Species: Human Faction: Loreos Profile: Harold gardener was a member of a lesser-known nobility family, not aligned with any kingdom, as Harold grew up he joined a group of outlaws that attacked Lenfald supply lines, causing economic devastation to many small towns and villages. Lenfald forces were dispatched to destroy the raiders, and Harold was defeated separating him from his men. He then devoted himself to serving as a simple bard who played music to tavern crowds for food and drink, until he was no longer a wanted criminal, but Harold longed for a kingdom to serve, and so he rode to the Lenfald capitol in order to pledge his service, but he was turned away. Harold then gathered up a large army to rally under his name and prepared to fight a war in which he would be outnumbered over 5 to 1, but just before he marched his men into battle, he was stopped in a small seaside town by one of his old friends, who convinced him to pledge his forces to the province of Loreos. Harold then did this, then returned a week later to capture the port city for his kingdom in the hopes of turning it into a thriving trade powerhouse, which could be used to fund the army. Harold is a master tactician, talented in the musical arts, a passable swordsman, and invaluable at financial analysis.

To Arms Challenge entry: Weapons Inspection Harold Gardener and his adviser Edvin the one-handed examine Loreos' newest weapon; a crossbow cart (drawstrings were not attached during this inspection). Elite troops have been trained to use them to defend the coastline and be used in ship to ship battles, this should give Loreos the upper hand in the war.

For The Glory Of Loreos! I love your enthusiasm and that is a great looking entry haroldgardener! Unfortunately however, gunpowder has not been discovered in Roawia and guns and cannons are not allowed. Would you be able to modify the carts to ballistas or spear throwers? Thanks!

Leaving my mark:Edvin the one handed has been experimenting with how he can perfect the standard war crossbow, and after much hard work, he has developed a powerful new weapon, the Naval Crossbow! This new weapon is much larger and more powerful than a standard crossbow, giving it extra range. However, the weapon is harder to carry, and has a high kick, meaning that is should be wielded by the strongest warriors or mounted onto crossbow carts (both methods pictured below). While this weapon is slightly too unruly for pitch battles, the potential it has in winning the many naval battles that are fast approaching thanks to the discovery of new lands is almost limitless.
Use the pictures below as a guide, and get building, For The Glory Of Loreos!
Above: an infantry soldier holds the new weapon to show its field capacity, and a crossbow cart is shown to the left.

Local Challenge 24 - To Arms!'Al Saqr' or 'the Falcon' Tower is an impressive structure build on one of the highest points of the new Loreesi colony of Port Valiant. From the top of the tower the sentries have a full view of the wide expanse of Sandy Bay, and can provide early warning of vessels approaching the port. The tower's construction was supervised by Loreesi explorer and pioneer Captain Alphoso de Rojas who can be seen inspecting the view from the top.

Local Challenge 24 - To Arms! - Toberg Address Local Challenge 24 - To Arms! - Toberg Address by THEDONALD13, on Flickr Build for Loreos Local Challenge XXIV 'A Call to Arms' for Lands of Roawia. "Thank you Headmaster." Lord Stout says with a reverence in his voice. We have traveled from East Stowburn at the behest of your Headmaster to come and speak with the upperclassmen as you grind your way through these final weeks here at Toberg. My master at arms , Faroosh is downstairs schooling the underclassmen in hand to hand combat. Afterwards I suggest you go and watch him for a bit. He puts on quiet a show! I am here to give you some first hand accounts of what battle and life on campaign will be like. I don't know if you know who I am, or where I came from. I started as a nobody. A Stowburn Warf Rat with no allegiance to anybody or anything. As a youngin I witnessed a man being held at knife point and hit the assailant in the back of the head with an oar. I did this because he was holding up a wealthy merchant and thought I would have a shot at a payday if I helped him out. When I did the merchant gave me choice, a bag of silvers and would send me on my way, or I could go with him. Learn his trade and see a life beyond those docks. I chose the ladder. I think of him fondly, more of a father than I had ever known. He taught me about money, where to find it and how to make it. He taught me how to ride, how to fight, how to lead, most importantly, how to be patient. In a pitched battle a Loreesi force should always have the advantage. Even when outnumbered, rarely do the other factions oppose us. Our affinity for the horse and it's advantages are our trademark. Warriors are taught from the time they can walk, how ride and manage a stable of horses. Often many of our Scout riders bring 3-6 horses on campaign. All equally trained and cared for. The horses are even a source of food in a pinch!" The auditorium gasped in horror, Loreesi horses are revered and to eat one is a crime punishable by trampling. Lord Stout chuckled loudly, not thinking the classroom would turn so quickly to the worst case scenario. "No, no, no, we don't eat the horses! Mare's milk and little blood with sustain a man on the march for days. One my first major commands I was led a supporting force into Outlaw territories. During the Great Orc Infighting, Stowburn took up arms with the Green Skins. We campaigned for months South of the border, fighting their Red faced comrades to a standstill. We eventually fought our way to steppes surrounding the Shade. There, we came across the largest Outlaw hoard I’d ever witnessed, a near 6000 men. Severely outnumbered we had to rely on our patience and superior tactics if we were to ever see Loreos again. I had a force of about 2400 men under my command. (1000 cavalry, 800 infantry and archers, 600 Green Skins) We skirted their main forces for days, teasing them with our presence. On the sixth day we set camp at the base of a small hill and sent all but two units of our cavalry wide to the left & right. We baited their center to advance, knowing if they closed the gap too quickly they would easily overtake our token force holding the hill. As we slowly retreated higher up the incline we collapsed their flanks with our heavy horse. The battle ended with a daring charge by the reserves on the left, breaking their command units and their archers. Your Headmaster was the young leftenant who led the charge that broke the enemies back. The Crimson Hills and Spilled Fields East of the Shade are named after our victory." A frenzied murmur came over the auditorium. Students excitedly whispering toward each other and soon a loud applause erupted. The Headmaster gave an icy stare into the crowd, but to no avail he relaxed and resigned himself to an approving nod. "Now, your questions?" Lord Stout opened the floor for rousing discussion with the group.

Harold: Are you sure that this ship will take us all the way to new Lenfel? Captain: No sir, but this ship will only take us to a much larger vessel, we are only using the Stallion to get to the secret location where the vessel we will take. Harold: Good, We need to get these new Naval crossbows to our scouting troops. Captain: Yes sir, but I hope we get there in time. Soldier: Lenfel boat off the port side! it's just a small boat, but there are several crossbowmen! Harold: If they see the new weapons, our cause may be lost! Captain: Should we fire on them sir, I know our weapons will be able to sink that small boat. Harold: Killing Lenfel soldiers would be taken as an act of war, I have no intention to be blamed for the start of fighting. Captain: we can't just let them go sir! Harold: Very well, turn the boat after we hit them so that we can pick up survivors, we must not let them warn their allies of our approach. Captain: Fire! Harold: Wonderful job, we must gather the survivors once the boat turns around.

Congratulations all on our spectacular GC win! If you haven't already seen we have gone from last in the global ranking to second! Soon we shall reclaim our rightful first place!!! In other good news, great effort in the Local Challenge, there were a lot of great entries, but in the end there can be only one winner, and I think it was pretty clear who that winner would be when he posted his awesome entry! Congratulations to thedonald13 for a spectacular entry and well deserved win!
