Announcing the Lands of Roawia Global Challenge XIII: The First Annual C.R.A.S.H. Games
Story and build by Sir Caelan Munro —————————————————————————————————-—————————————————————————————
“Who goes there?!”
“Oh come off it Feraud, it is Armand d’Hubert, on my way to Ferncroft.”
“Ahhh, d’Hubert, it is you,” Sir Gabriel Feraud halted his mount just shy of his old acquaintance’s own horse. “It has been years! I heard that you are a messenger for King Chartres now? Congratulations. And what is a man of the King doing in these hills this fine day? This is not the road to Ferncroft, it lies in the valley there below.”
“I am looking for you Gabriel! You are an important man now too, yes? I have been looking for the Sheriff of Ferncroft…and you forced me to exert myself in coming up here to find him!”
“Paaahh, you heard they made me sheriff. Tis more trouble than it is worth. For instance, I am up here looking for some scoundrel Outlaw smugglers. They are using these hills as a hidden way to run wheat up to those rebellious Lenfels operating out of Durrough. Avoiding the new tariffs set by the King, they are. Amazing how men dishonor themselves just for a few coins.”
“How goes the hunting then?” d’Hubert asked out of curiosity.
“Not well. They are more clever than I am, I must admit. I will have to hire a tracker, and one with great stealth to avoid being seen.”
“Aaahh, that reminds me of why I am here Feraud. I come to ensure the news gets out to the people of Ferncroft on the king’s games — I need your men to help spread the word, there are coming up very soon. And of course I know you are a great man of sport and are no doubt interested.”
His interest indeed peaked, Feraud leaned forward in the saddle, “What’s this about the king’s games then?’
“Hah, I knew you would be keen on the King’s C.R.A.S.H!”
“The what?!” Feraud looked shocked and demanded, “Has our good king been hurt?! Was it a carriage accident?”
d’Hubert laughed, “No my loyal but deaf sheriff — the games man, the games. They are called, “C.R.A.S.H.”
A delay, and then, “Count me out then.”
Another chuckle from d’Hubert, “It is not named for what happens to you, but for what you must compete in. C.R.A.S.H. stands for the events of the games, and since all the peoples’ factions are invited, each are represented by their own particular sport: Chariot Racing from our own beloved Loreos, Archery from those wayword Lenfels….”
“Oh no!” the sheriff objected, “why are those lowly turncoats invited?”
“Gabriel my good sheriff the entire idea of the games by the king is to create bridges over troubled waters, yes? Our gracious king is extending an olive branch of possible reconciliation in the guise of friendly competition. It is most civilized of him.”
“Or,” Feraud suddenly insisted, “we could just ride up there in force and lop some rebellious heads off….We have done it before you know, and under our own Prince Mark of Falworth.”
“Fortunately the king has a cooler head than you Feraud! Ho ho eh what!! You always were a man of much action and less thought. But try and stay calm for this next part of the games: Stealth…a sport from the Outlaws.”
Feraud lost his battle with “calm”. Throwing his gauntlet down into the dirt, he cursed and exclaimed, “The scum of Roawia are invited!? What, all of them? This had better be a trap for them or it’s all madness!!”
“No trap, truly Gabriel. I know it is upsetting for a Man of the Law such as yourself, but the King sees some value in extending a cautious hand toward Baron Locklear; he is the newly elected King of the Outlaws in case you have not heard.”
“As if there could be such a thing,” Feraud interjected. “It is that Queen of his of course, she comes from Outlaw blood and Outlaw blood flows through her veins alright…”
“Here now!” d’Hubert hotly interrupted, suddenly very serious, “I will stand no unkind word toward our lovely queen. She has been a gift to the king, and they are most happy together. A word against the queen is a word against the king!”
Feraud immediately realized the gross mistake he had made in that d’Hubert was no longer merely a fellow Loreesi but also was now a king’s man, and it was clear where the messenger’s loyalties lie. The sheriff therefore cast aside all his objections to inviting the Outlaws, and there were many, and after nodding in apology, quickly changed the subject. “So….ahh…I suppose Garheim’s sport will be sea fishing…whaling then?”
“Very difficult to do from dry land, wouldn’t you say?” d’Hubert shot back, still a little indignant.
“Ahhh…quite, yes,” Feraud agreed uncomfortably. “So…what sport will represent our Garheim friends then?”
“Hurling.” Seeing the sheriff’s confusion, d’Hubert added, “For distance, and style.”
A slow laugh erupted from Feraud, and his embarrassment turned to merriment. “Caaaw, I knew the Garhim loved to overindulge in their mead, but to make sport of spewing afterward is really a bit much…”
“Spear and log throwing, Gabriel,” the messenger corrected as he began to wonder just how Feraud had obtained his new position. “Spears for distance, caber tossing for style. Look, read the announcement.” And he handed the scroll over:
—————————————————————————————————-
Hear ye, hear ye, all good people of these lands, Loreesi and Garhim, Lenfel and those not affiliated with the Crown,
Their majesties the King and Queen of Roawia announce the International Friendship Games:
King Chartres and Queen Emmaline invite all sporting-minded heroes of our collective lands to join this four-part test of strength, accuracy, intelligence, bravery and luck. Each hero will compete in and complete all four trials, with the best overall performance winning the hero great honor, renown, and a fine reward. The overall winning province will earn a gold cup of great craftsmanship.
The goal of these games is to bring us all together in the spirit of peaceful trust and friendship. There will be feasts and dancing, a large fair and markets, and all manners of festivities to accompany this event. The games will be held on the coast of Northeast Loreos, just south of the Aines River, so that all people may arrive and depart in safety and at their pleasure.
~ Please note that heroes will compete with their natural skills, and with no outside or magical assistance ~
—————————————————————————————————-
“Well Gabriel, what do you say?” d’Hubert already knew, but asked anyway.
Sheriff Feraud thought on it briefly and then declared, “I am in! Especially if I get to hurl a Lenfel!”

Announcing GC XIII: “The Lands of Roawia C.R.A.S.H. Games”
How it works:
#1. Each member submits a character with an attribute list of values between 1-4, with 9 points total. They will also submit a photo, a short backstory and why they are competing. The character can be their own PC or an NPC if desired.
Attributes (totaling 9 points overall - each attribute ranges from 1-4)
Strength
Accuracy
Intelligence
Bravery
Luck
- Choose your 9 points carefully. The member with the lowest overall game score at the end of CRASH will receive the official title of, “Gong Farmer Athlete”.
Sport with Associated Attributes
Chariot Racing - Requires Bravery(x2) + Intelligence
Archery - Requires Accuracy(x2) + Strength
Stealth - Requires Intelligence(x2) + Accuracy
Hurling - Requires Strength(x2) + Bravery
#2 Each member also builds at least one scene from the competition, minimum size 16x16 and max size 32x32. You may build as many as a scene from each event if you choose, up to a total of four scenes; you will get personal points for each but it will not add to your faction's score. The events are:
~ Chariot Racing ~ Loreos' representative sport, this involves a 9-loop run around a central median much like the awesome scene in the 1959 movie, Ben-Hur. Loreesi get a +1 to their primary multiplier.
~ Archery ~ Lenfald's representative sport. This consists of three shooting events: Bullseye (50 yards), Long Shot (200 yards) and the Dodger (target is swinging on a rope at 25 yards). Lenfels' get a +1 to their primary multiplier.
~ Stealth ~ Outlaws’ representative sport. This involves ingress through a darkened maze to grab a flag, and then egress with it, all the while avoiding getting spotted and shot by archers shooting from above with soft-headed arrows. Outlaws get a +1 to their primary multiplier.
~ Hurling ~ Garheim's representative sport. This consists of two throwing events, spears for distance and caber tossing for style (you will probably have to Wikipedia this one if you are not Scottish….) Garhims get a +1 to their primary multiplier.
#3 Both the character submission and the event scene submission must be posted in this thread by 11:59pm Friday 12 August.
#4 On the day of the games (the weekend of 13-14 August), one KC member from each faction shall do all the rolling (online with a random number generator 1-6) and total up the scores for their event: Loreos for Stealth, Garheim for Archery, Outlaws for Chariot Racing and Lenfald for Hurling.
Competition Scoring System:
Luck applies to each roll. The luck attribute determines how many rolls are thrown to determine the best outcome for the primary attribute (Example: Luck rating of 2 means that for the event, the player gets 2 rolls to determine their best primary attribute score).
Sport with Associated Attributes
Chariot Racing - Requires Bravery(x2) + Intelligence
Archery - Requires Accuracy(x2) + Strength
Stealth - Requires Intelligence(x2) + Accuracy
Hurling - Requires Strength(x2) + Bravery
Primary Roll(s) determines primary attribute multiplier, which is then multiplied by the attribute value and then doubled (this puts emphasis on the primary stat for each event). If the event is the national sport for the player, a +1 is added to the primary multiplier.
Secondary Roll determines secondary attribute multiplier, which is then multiplied by the attribute value and added to the primary attribute score.
Example: Sir Gabriel Feraud. Feraud is the sheriff of Ferncroft in Loreos, and he is competing to gain attention from the Court for himself, to show his prowess as a Loreesi, and to show up the competing Lenfels and Outlaws.
Player name: Sheriff Gabriel Feraud
Strength - 2
Accuracy - 2
Intelligence - 1
Bravery - 2
Luck - 2
Example Event: Hurling (Primary Stat - Strength / Secondary Stat - Bravery) Note that this is not Loreos’ national sport, so no additional +1 to primary multiplier.
Feraud has a luck rating of 2, so he gets 2 rolls to determine his primary stat multiplier.
Primary Attribute Roll results: 2, 5 - take 5 as multiplier
Primary Score: 2 (strength rating) x 5 (primary multiplier) x 2 (primary bonus) = 20
Secondary Attribute Roll result (only one roll here, regardless of luck, in order to not over-influence luck stat): 3
Secondary Score: 2 (bravery rating) x 3 (secondary multiplier) = 6
Total hurling score: 26. This is also performed for Chariot Racing, Archery, and Stealth. So if those scores wind up 34, 24, and 22, then the total score for Sir Gabriel Feraud is 106. Not bad! He will have bragging rights that night in whichever tavern he stumbles into.
#5 The results for each player will be announced with action and humorous stories thereafter.
***The Outlaw Clause*** Members of the Outlaw faction only can take advantage of their natural tendency to...well..."ignore the rules". When they enter, then can state that they as an Outlaw want to cheat in Chariot Racing, Archery, Hurling or if they are particularly risky, all three. Essentially, as long as they don't get caught they will get +1 to their primary multiplier as if it was their national sport...but they have a 20% chance of getting caught. The Stealth category is already an advantage for them so no cheating in this sport. So 1-100 on the random number generator, and any number between 0 and 21 and they were caught, with the resulting penalty of complete forfeiture of the competition (but not their personal build points) and an immediate escort out of Loreos' territory for that cheater. Otherwise 21 - 100 gets them the +1 in that event. So, the question Outlaws have to ask themselves is, "Well do ya feel lucky, punk? Well do ya?!?"
Again, the deadline to submit for this event is 11:59pm Sunday 14 August (UPDATED). Enjoy this one, it’s easy so we should have a lot of participation.
Cheers, Gary
Good luck everyone!SaveSaveSaveSave
