I've seen people post photos of their factions and I wondered what your thoughts were on how big a faction should be when considering a specific size MOC. For example: What is a good number for one side in a 32 x 32 area? It's pretty silly to cram in 60 soldiers in a MOC just to show off your faction and it isn't very cost effective. I've recently been giving a lot of thought to how big a group should be that mans a 32 x 32 castle and the number I come up with is about 5 or 6 regular soldiers. Then you add a leader and perhaps a second in command. This way you end up with a decent amount of figures, but not overkill. It also is more cost effective to be able to have several different factions instead of limiting yourself to just one huge army. Just curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Well, from personal experience (and an army builder myself), I have went overkill on quite a few Mocs with figures. I definitely agree with your proposal, that 5 or 6 would be more than adequate.
Too many figs, and it's hard to tell exactly what is going on.

Thanks for replying Schmidt. Don't get me wrong, I've seen people pull off amazing builds with loads of minifigs in their MOCs. I'd much rather have 10 factions of 6 men than 2 factions of 30. I have minotaurs, 2 different colored orcs tribes (for now), lizard men, skeletons, Yeti-men, dwarves, forestmen/elves, an evil human faction or 2, and enough to have 3 good guy factions. Oh, and I almost forgot the dragon men faction I have in the works. Once you add special characters like a king, general, or wizard, your army starts to get bigger, but for regular soldiers, I like keeping them low.

I like to have lots of soldiers in lots of factions, haha.
But generally, I'd agree that for the vast majority of MOCs, you don't really need more than a dozen figs, so two sides of 6 would be pretty sufficient. That's about how big some of my "special" factions are (yeti people, cyclops, city guards, etc.)

I've fallen into the trap of trying to 'army build' a number of times, but realistically I'm personally unlikely to ever be able to use more than 10 or so figs in a faction, so that's what I've been trying to reduce a lot of my factions down to...
That said, collaborative convention MOCs look awesome with hundreds of figs and SOMEONE needs to be able to provide the collection!

Thanks for the replies guys. AK, Where are your Yeti men? I looked through your Flickr and can't find them. Andy, I've done that too, but it just seemed empty to have large groups and nothing substantial in the way of a build. LOR was a big inspiration for me wanting to have different factions and organizing them. With the development of custom vendors and LEGO offering more choices, it's difficult to have large armies of each cool looking faction.

I don't know if I ever took any pics of them. Their ranks are still growing, but here's a snapshot of them in action that Sean took at BrickCon last year: Mikithdar Stronghold by Sean Edmison, on Flickr

Those guys are awesome. Are they all the same, or is their one distinct leader (or captain or something of that effect)?

They are essentially the same. Torso differences are pretty much covered up by the yeti head.

Nice AK!! I remember you commenting on my post a year ago about Yeti-men. You mentioned you would keep a look out on BL, but I didn't know you actually got them. Good going. I have 5 of them over all.
