GCXII - Unrestricted - Extortion - A Fair Deal
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-A Fair Deal-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
"That'll be two ships - already harbored, ready to sail - and the right to fell and keep any additional lumber ye may need," the big knight said, gesturing at the roped and staked plot of land beneath the tower as he leaned against the railing. "That is, this acre here." Hollander did his best to suppress a grin. He'd be killing two birds with one stone, if this tariff worked; the farmer with the rights to the fife had already payed the big knight labor fees for clearing the land, and he knew the Loreesi were short on timber.
"Yes, well the land does look good..." Benedicio replied in the heavy southern accent that usually accompanied those who hailed from the desert. The Loreesi - who claimed to be a duke or an earl or some other such title that Hollander cared little to remember - frowned, audibly sighing as he gazed out at the pines, firs, and spruces that dotted the plot of land, pressed right up against the wooded slopes of the mountains. "And I cannot deny that lumber has become quite a commodity in these times - scarce, in my country. And do not get me started on the Lenfels; the prices they demand are outrageous."
"Then I take it my offer is to your liking?"
"As much as a camel likes drinking from a dry riverbed, I am certain... Would not two chests suffice?"
"The offer stands. Three chests. You can either accept my generosity - which you would be wise to do, as you are beginning to try my patience," Hollander replied with feigned agitation. "Or you can sail back to your homeland empty-handed or return to the Lenfels, though I am sure that their price will only have risen since your last meeting. Three chests of gold and the tariff for one acre of land. Those are your ships; right there. Your means of reaching the lands to the west: growing out of the ground."
"It seems I have no other choice. You northmen drive a hard bargain."
