That's a good idea. I was thinking of using clear fishing line so that it wouldn't be too visible, but a cloud to hide the tape might be a good idea anyway.

Okay, so there are a couple of schools of thought already emerging. Jubal is using the clear support beams, while Josh is going with black 2x2 round brick with a goal of having the black blend into the tablecloths at BrickCon. Both are building a foot or so off the ground, but Jubal is building some terrain under his sections to hide/support his column supports, while Josh is trying to go minimalist under the sections. You are of course free to go in whatever direction inspires you, and clear fishing line might definitely come in handy....

I think I'm more in Josh's camp. I want this thing to be 100 miles in the air. No mountains or terrain for reference to the earth

How big are we planning on making these? Cause we could make a semi- standard size, with some sort of connection idea similar to the old moonbase.

Standard sized castles doesn't really sound very realistic. If there are connections, I think rope bridges would be a good way to go.
Also, since each castle will have a rock island that it is floating on, it doesn't seem like connecting them up against each other would be feasible.
My first island is only about 16x16. Just large enough for a tree. I want to build a bigger one that I can fit a small tower on and connect the two with a rope bridge.

Glad I found this! Eli and I were a few hours away from starting on a Floating Island Collab when I heard from Andrew on TBB that there was a floating islands Collab planed. Great minds think alike I guess We decided to not conflict and hopped on another idea of ours, gonna be multiple themes, with a footprint of about 10 Feet by 10 Feet (Hopefully) Looking forward to seeing you all again, with some luck I could hop in and build an island for this as well.

I just heard this is a thing! I think I can adjust my castle plan to float.... has there been any more discussion of how to blend it all together? I like the black blending into the table idea. I have some sky blue with cloud printing poster board as well we could use somewhere...

Should we start a different thread to coordinate non-sky-castle stuff, or discuss that here as well? I just have one small floating rock built to contribute to the sky-castle layout, as previously mentioned. I also am hoping to have my stand-alone keep finished, which will be winter-themed and will be 80x144 studs. If anyone can build some winter-themed landscape to go around it, that would be cool. I probably won't have time to do much in that regard. WIP pics are here, if anyone is interested in helping out - merlins-beard.com/thread/1021/ak-bricksters-castle-wip

OK - Mine is winter themed too. I'll see if I can do some landscape to go in between.. Are you baseplate high or base+1brick at your edges? Or have you decided?

Undecided at this point. Right now the rock just starts on the baseplate, but I could build a moat around the whole thing so the opposite bank could be at BpB (or higher) and I can just pour in loose studs for the water in between the rock faces.

Thanks Curt. No plans for anything like that at the moment. We mainly did it last year because "INVASION!" was the BrickCon theme last year.

Sorry I haven't even posted in here yet, seems like I missed the latter discussion. Yes, I'm still building the giant floating rock display, and any additional ones in that theme are welcome. I do (plan) to have a landscape under mine, am currently laying it out and trying to assess how much I can make, but it's not required. I think the idea is any additional floating rocks without landscape can be on a black tablecloth (Or was it clouds?). I'm not really sure how to do the edges of my landscape, if it should drop off into cliffs or something.
I don't actually know how many other floating rocks there are. I know Jordan and Josh have some made, I haven't heard if Sean is making one, but it would be good to know.
I've really got my hands full trying to finish what I'd planned (Recent business at work, etc. are not helping!) but I'm hoping to get this done.
Jordan, I could maybe bring some landscaping stuff for a winter-type area, but I'm not even sure if I'll get the floating island done if I take on anything more. Maybe could bring some simple stuff to put together there.

Even pretty basic white baseplates with a few sparse / barren looking trees or evergreens would help.

My section will be smaller than yours, and my frame is in a similar state to yours at the moment, but I, too, will find some way to get it done (in addition to terrain for Jordan's build). (I'm nearly done with trophies already, we have Labor Day weekend coming up, and I'm taking the whole week off before BrickCon, so those factors should help.)
